The "de facto poverty tax" related to the Affordable Care Act does not tax poor people, only people who can afford to purchase insurance but choose not to. We all pay costs related to emergency room care for the uninsured. It is not a perfect solution. Any improvements to Obamacare would be welcome. So far congress has been largely useless at getting the job done. Maybe when the Dems take control in January they will take another shot at it. Most other countries in the world have some form of universal health care for their people.

Those countries don't have the population of the U. S.. They are also not doing very well in the financial part from what I have read. These countries have increased the tax's on their people to provide for the insurance.

We can continue to subsidize insurance companies with tax dollars so people can afford premiums and we can continue to pay for emergency room costs with tax dollars, or we can eliminate insurance company administrative costs and profits and expand medicare. Both methods require sufficient revenue.

One question I have for you. When has the government ever done something that proved to be cost efficient?

How do you think these emergency rooms are going to look after we let these freeloaders in over the border? If you think the waiting lines are long now.... Such a stupid set-up. What you Leftys will do to grow your base at tax payers expense.

Social Security is a good example of this. Social Security Administration tells us since 1989 admin expenses have totaled one percent or less of combined expenditures from the trust funds.

From what I have read, the government just spent the actual amount needed for SS and spent the rest for other government projects. That doesn't seem to have benefited the Social Security program. It benefited the government by Congress spending these unused monies. I also read that they bought federal bonds with the SS monies. This is now sitting in a cabinet or some other place and these bonds have not been repaid to the SS administration. Just saying this makes no sense.

You're right about how excess social security funds are invested. They are invested in the safest investment possible...U.S. Treasury notes. The U.S. treasury has never defaulted on its bonds. It makes no sense for money to sit idle. Current workers pay social security tax on their wages and those tax payments are used to pay benefits out to current retirees. According to the plan, when the outflows exceed money taken in, bonds will be redeemed and treasury will pay back money borrowed. The latest projections point to the fact that at some point in the future current outflows will be greater than money paid in. One proposal to improve this condition is to raise the wage ceiling on wages subject to social security tax. Another idea is to raise the age when retirees can begin to receive benefits. When it come time to collect, everybody loves the program.

Tax payers are paying for medical services for the uninsured now, either directly to insurance companies or through programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and others designed to help the poor. A stupid set-up is for our government to do nothing about improving the current system. It should take steps to attempt to stem the rising costs of medical services and prescription drugs. This has nothing to do with growing anybody's base but has everything to do with providing medical care to all citizens.

I would go along with raising the age to collect SS. I didn't like my payback from SS. I worked until I was 69 and if that money had been a separate account for me I would be receiving just over double what I receive per month now and I would have enough money at that increase, till I am 99 years old. All of us have been bamboozled and defrauded by Congress and the elites that control this country. Any bill that they pass doesn't apply to them, they seem to be above the law. All laws passed by Congress should be applied to them, just as ordinary Americans have to abide by those laws.
