Pete, once more, your command of the English language fails. To assimilate means to become Americanized, not just to get a job. Most migrants do not assimilate. If you worked with them, you would know that. Muslims do not assimilate because their religion forbids assimilation. Central Americans do not assimilate because they form ghettos and other than for their jobs, restrict their lives to those ghettos.
I have worked with many migrants. Some are very nice people and I have been quite fond of them but they have never indicated any desire to become Americanized. They do not assimilate!
Unless it is your desire to destroy the nation, assimilation is an absolute requirement of citizenship and permanent residence.

If they apply for asylum legally, no body is preventing them from applying. If they are crossing the border illegally then yes, they are not allowed to apply. We don't allow criminals to hide from their crimes through asylum.
