While we never agree on anything I do believe every President should visit the troops if he is going to allow them to be in harm's way.

It is a huge morale builder, unless you've been in the military, and particularly in war conditions, people might not get the charge troops get from a visit, even the live feeds going to other bases are big.

USO tours in Vietnam, those were the bomb for troops stuck in tours where they were getting away sometimes only once a year and a couple of weekends.

Like you say, there are big optics on this one.

Reagan was a different kind of president, he managed to avoid being considered the biggest liar ever in history, people liked him.

The Kennedys had a long history of military service, John served, he didn't need to prove his patriotism or courage...

Also it would be wise to consider that those times of which you speak were before Democrats included in their quiver the weapon of accusing their opponents of exactly what they themselves were doing, i.e. lying. This, of course was being widely used in the Soviet bloc at that time and came to be known as 'disinformation', a term nicely explained by a defector from that gulag, Gen Ian Pacepa, also an author of a book by the same name, "Disinformation" and one which is well worth reading. Modern day Democrats have adopted some here-to-fore unthinkable tactics, possibly because they have run out of ethical and long accepted motives. My own feeling is that it is because they have moved so drastically to the left that those previously frowned upon tactics now seem just fine to them.
