Roman Catholicism - It threw Christianity Out the Window!

The theological difference between Roman Catholicism and historic Biblical Christianity:

They are two separate religions.

Cited references of Catholic beliefs are from the new Catechism of the Catholic Church, imprimatur from eminent Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and the “Holy See,” copyright 1994.

Salvation through Faith by Grace Alone:
The biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone ignited the Reformation of the church by Bible Believers. Acceptance of a sinner into the presence of a Holy, Righteous God is based only on the “righteousness of God in Jesus Christ” (Romans 3:19-24), accomplished by Christ, imputed to the sinner by grace, through his faith in the Savior, the only God-given means TO ETERNAL LIFE is acceptance of God's free gift.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.(Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 5:1, 11:6; Galatians 3:6; Ephesians 2:5, 3:7; Philippians 3:9; Titus 2:11, 3:7; I Timothy 1:14)

Roman Catholicism says: "Man is justified by baptism plus faith, plus additional works (Catholic Catechism 1265-1271, 1987-1995). The Holy Spirit's transforming work in the sinner becomes the grounds, along with faith, for justification. Most good Catholics are therefore very concerned with “being good enough,” “meriting,” and “earning” their own salvation".

The Catholic Catechism says of baptism: "Baptism not only purifies from all sins, but also makes the neophyte 'a new creature,' an adopted son of God, who has become a ‘partaker of the divine nature,’ member of Christ and co-heir with him, and a temple of the Holy Spirit" (Catechism 1265). "… Justified by faith in Baptism, they are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians" (Catechism 1271).

Bible believing Christians believe that "WE ARE JUSTIFIED BY GRACE ALONE, THROUGH FAITH ALONE, BECAUSE OF CHRIST ALONE." The Catholic faith does not accept this statement. Catholicism adds human righteousness to the requirements, including that we must:

Love and worship God, Pray, Fast, Love one's neighbor, Practice self-renunciation, Obey the commandments of God, Bear witness to the Catholic faith, Follow supernatural inspiration in deeds, Confess the major doctrines of the Church, including Transubstantiation.

But regarding salvation, the apostle Paul said of his own righteous works: "I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ - the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith." (Philippians 3:8-9)

Where justification by faith alone is not clearly understood and taught, “another gospel” is being proclaimed. Galatians includes a stern warning about those who proclaim “another gospel.”:

"I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed." (Galatians 1:6-9)

Salvation in Christ Alone is Disregarded and Discarded:
The Bible says that Christ is the only way of salvation. Biblical Christian convictions have always been that no sinner can be saved apart from the saving work of Christ granted to him through his faith. Christ's word, "No one comes to the Father except through Me," means that those only who are united to Christ will be saved; all others will die in their sins and suffer the wrath of God forever.

The Catholic church teaches that only through faith in Christ plus Catholic baptism is salvation granted. There are exceptions; e.g., in the cases of martyrs for the faith (Catechism 1258), and infants dying without baptism (Catechism 1261).

The Second Vatican Councils Decree on Ecumenism states: "For it is through Christs Catholic Church ALONE, which is the universal help toward salvation, that the fullness of the means of salvation can be obtained."
Catholicism teaches that all mankind, whether they come to faith in Christ or not, if they have a desire to please God and to be right with Him, though ignorant of Jesus Christ, can be saved! Many adherents of all other religions, may be saved because they receive the benefits of Catholic baptism through their ignorance and desire!

"Every man who is ignorant of the Gospel of Christ and of his Church, but seeks the truth and does the will of God in accordance with his understanding of it, can be saved. It may be supposed that such persons would have desired Baptism explicitly if they had known its necessity." (Catechism 1260)
This doctrine called “Rapprochement.” makes Catholicism a kind of universal religion, placing all religions under its umbrella. All people are thus capable of being saved, even in their unbelief (see Catechism 1257-1261).

The Bible says: "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6)

Mary, Jesus' human Mother is worshiped as a Goddess: All Christians have historically held Mary in high regard as a godly and highly favored woman of God, a sinner saved by the grace of her divine Son.

Catholic dogma has exalted her in an irresponsible and idolatrous way. She is declared to have been free from all original sin (the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, first declared in 1854; Catechism 491-492), free from any actual sin during her life (Catechism 411), and perpetually a virgin even after the birth of Jesus (Catechism 499-500)."
Mary… was redeemed from the moment of her conception… preserved immune from all stain of original sin. (Catechism 491)
Mary remained free of every personal sin her whole life long. (Catechism 493)

Allegedly, Mary was taken, body and soul, into heaven (Catechism 974). This is the dogma of the “Assumption of Mary,” declared in the year 1950! In heaven, Mary supposedly intercedes for the church as "advocate, helper, benefactress, and mediatrix" (Catechism 969). She is made a co-savior with her Son (Catechism 968).

These doctrines are so far afield from the Scriptures that biblical Christians are amazed and saddened.

The Bible says: "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
(1 Timothy 2:5)

Jesus Christ of Nazareth… Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:10-12)

The Papacy's Infallibility Must be Believed:
Catholicism teaches the dogma of the infallibility of the Roman pontiff. This was not declared by the church until the year 1870. Yet through the church's motto of Semper idem (“Always the same”), they lie and claim that the church has always believed this, going back to the first Pope, the Apostle Peter! (Catechism 80-82, 85).
The pope, as the vicar (substitute) of Christ, is considered infallible only when he speaks “ex cathedra” (“from the chair” of Peter). Thus, for the Roman Catholic, submission to the formal teaching of the church's tradition is as important as submission to the Scriptures

"As a result the Church, to whom the transmission and interpretation of Revelation is entrusted, does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence. (Catechism 82)".

The Reformation of the Christian faith restored to the body of Christ the doctrine of "sola scriptura" (“Scripture alone”). The Roman Catholic faith has elevated the pope above Jesus Christ and the Bible by claiming he can nullify Scripture through papal decrees.
The conscience of the biblical Christian (like that of Martin Luther) is bound by the Bible alone. "The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, the only infallible rule for faith and life." It cannot be both ways. The traditions of the churches must be subordinate to, and corrected by, the Scriptures, which alone are the Word of God.

They Literally Believe They Sacrifice Jesus Christ over again in Every Mass:
A Catholic mass is by definition the sacrifice of Christ (Catechism 1322, 1338). The Baltimore Catechism (Confraternity Edition of 1949) says, "Christ gives us His own body and blood in the holy Eucharist first, to be offered as a sacrifice commemorating and renewing for all time the sacrifice of the cross" (Catechism 356). The Catholic catechisms quote the passages that speak of Christ dying once, then also teach that the priest miraculously transforms the bread and wine into Christ's real body, and that Jesus is then sacrificed anew, at each mass.

Without exception, Bible believing Evangelicals and Protestants teach that rather than the bodily sacrifice of Christ, it is a symbolical memorial commanded by Jesus, and blessed by God.

This contrast goes to the very heart of the difference between Catholicism and Bible Believing Christianity. Christian faith denies that Catholicism has the power to pull Jesus from His chair in heaven, to be sacrificed in the mass's claimed “miracle of transubstantiation,” or that the purpose of the Lord's Supper's is to witness the death of Jesus Christ over and over again, while physically devouring Him.

Nor did He (Jesus Christ) enter heaven to offer himself again and again. (Hebrews 9:25-10:18)

Purgatory = Alice Down the Rabbit Hole:
The Roman Catholic Church does not teach its people they have full forgiveness of their sins through the death of Christ alone, nor that the righteousness of God, by Jesus' death on Calvary, is their permanent possession. The faithful Catholic is never allowed to have full assurance of salvation during their Earthly life, for they are still capable of committing “mortal sin.” A Catholic's redemption is always dependent on their good standing in the Church, thus the Church owns them.

Catholics are taught that when they die, unless they have committed mortal sins (except for the special class of “saints”), they all go to purgatory. The Catechism states, "All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven…" after paying thousands for special masses.

"The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory at the Councils of Florence and Trent" (Catechism 1030-1031). This concept of purgatory led to the unbiblical Catholic doctrine of prayers for the dead (Catechism 1032). Catholic believers are taught that "it is a holy and a wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins" (Catechism 958).

There is no mention of purgatory in the 66 books of the Bible, and the biblical view of forgiveness assures redeemed sinners that their sins have all been paid by Christ. The doctrine of purgatory is rejected as an erroneous addition by all Christians who believe in God's Holy Word, the Bible. It was created by the Roman Catholic church hierarchy, as they taught Christ's death was inadequate, demanding such a doctrine.

This doctrine fits with Catholicism's whole system of justification by faith plus works - a keystone of Catholic theology. It is impossible to reconcile Catholic teaching with Bible based Christian teaching on this point. Purgatory is part of a false gospel.

The Old Testament Priestly System = Reinvented by Roman Catholics:
The Old Testament clearly established a priesthood (the Levites) to serve Israel. This Earthly priesthood was a symbol of the Messiah's eternal priesthood. The book of Hebrews explains its purpose and fulfillment. Historic Christianity, because of its study of the Scriptures, reaffirmed the “universal priesthood of all Christian believers.” The special office of priest was fulfilled in our Savior, and thus came to an end in Him.
Catholicism claims this universal priesthood, but sustains a “weak and beggarly element” of the old covenant by assigning to its priests magical power in a system created by the Catholic Church but unjustifiable by the Bible.

Scholar of Roman Catholic Scripture, Raymond E. Brown, discovered that: "When we move from the Old Testament to the New Testament, there are pagan priests and Jewish priests, but no individual Christian is ever identified as a priest. The Epistle to the Hebrews speaks of the high priesthood of Jesus by comparing his death and entry into heaven with the actions of the Jewish high priest who went into the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle once a year with an offering for himself and for the sins of his people (Hebrews 9:6-7).

The author of Hebrews does not associate the priesthood of Jesus with the Eucharist or the Last Supper; or suggest that other Christians are priests in the likeness of Jesus. The once-for-all atmosphere that surrounds the priesthood of Jesus in Hebrews 10:12-14, is why there are no Christian priests in the New Testament period.(1)

All Biblical Christianity repudiates the Catholic priesthood system, and would consider its proposed imposition a radical violation of its conscience before God.

Other Catastrophic Differences:
Confession of sins to a priest (a mediator between God and man) I Timothy 2:5—"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" I Peter 2:5 (speaking of all Christians being a priesthood)
Prayers to dead saints (Deuteronomy 18:10-12—"Let no one be found among you who… who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD…")
Veneration of statues and images (see Exodus 20:4-5 - "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the Earth beneath… You shall not bow down to them or worship them…")
Offering of masses, prayers and rosaries for those who suffer in “purgatory” (see Hebrews 9:27 - "…Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.")

There are likely some true believers in Christ within the Roman Catholic Church, though they may be scarce as hen's teeth. The Catholic theological and ecclesiastical system is, however, a false system. It leads people to trust in the Roman Catholic church, or in themselves, for salvation. It places the church's dogmas on par with the Bible. It proclaims false views of God, of man, of sin, and of salvation.

Amen and Amen thank you Zemirah for that lesson and if Doc110 ever brings up his purgatory discussion this will be handy to have. It is a shame what the Catholic Church has done to its lay members and we can all see the results of that in Radiance3, Doc110, and Padremike who believe the entire dogma hook line and sinker. Writing Scriptures proving such points puts Radiance3 and Doc110 in a tizzy because they have no concrete answers to the scriptures. So they have to use the Catholic dogma over and over again to justify themselves not only to us but I believe to themselves as well. They act very much like two and three year olds running around with their fingers in their ears shouting la la la la until they drive you crazy listening to them. So sad what the Roman Catholic Church has done to its members. Hopefully it will be the priests on up that will suffer for leading the people astray and not the ignorant followers of their insane doctrine.

Good info.

This series by John MacArthur goes into even greater detail on the heresies of the Catholic Church. It's a supplement to the article above.

Thank you for that Rose42 I will keep this in case I ever feel so inclined as to go circle dancing with Padiance3 or Doc110 again. In which case this will come in for good advice and points of discrepancies with the Holy Bible. But the circle dance part is the true discouragement to even entering into any discussion with them.

Good luck with that. They don't even read what's posted or if they do they don't have a reasoned Biblical response. I have read Catholic doctrine many times and I'm done with that. There are demonic forces at work in that church.

Amen and Amen I see that Radiance3 posted something on the Catholic eucharist or something but no responses to her thread the last time I checked. Maybe after while they will just go away.

The 500-year-old Sola Scriptura by Martin Luther is not the complete Gospel of Christ. It was selectively copied from the Catholic Church built by Christ through Satin Peter. Sola Scriptura has no history associated to it for 1,987 years

Matthew 16:18.
https://biblehub.com/matthew/16-18.htm

"I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

Protestants do not have the Covenant of the Holy Eucharist with Christ.
THE EUCHARIST IS THE COVENANT THAT FINALLY BINDS CHRIST WITH THE CHILDREN OF GOD.

The Real Presence of Jesus Christ is literally, not symbolically, present in the Holy Eucharist—body, blood, soul and divinity. Catholics believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist because Jesus tells us this is true in the Bible:

“I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die."

"I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh".

The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’

So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him” (John 6:48-56).

Furthermore, the early Church Fathers either imply or directly state that the bread and wine offered in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper is really the body and blood of Jesus Christ. In other words, the doctrine of the Real Presence that Catholics believe today was believed by the earliest Christians 2,000 years ago!

This miracle of God’s physical presence to us at every Mass is the truest testament to Christ’s love for us and His desire for each of us to have a personal relationship with Him.
The Holy Eucharist.
1 Corinthians 11:26
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

• (John 6:53-56 RSV) So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you;

{54} he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

{55} For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
{56} He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.

.58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”

59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Listen to this most compelling research of Dr. Scott Hann, about the "Fourth Cup", that Jesus took at his last breath when he said, "It is finished"
Dr. Scott Hann was a former Protestant who returned to the Catholic Church.

Because Protestants like you, are afraid to challenge the facts of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

Because Protestants have NO COVENANT WITH CHRIST.

No we have challenged them Radiance but it is you the chooses to use your churches reasoning and chooses to ignore the bible as I see it now only if the Lord punishes your wicked priests, popes and cardinals of lieing to the young in their care will you be saved. Oh and by the way there is no such thing as purgatory in the bible either. I would suggest that you and Doc110 go and have a mutual admiration society all your own and you may want to invite PadreMike as well to the group of of pagan worshipers.

It's pretty easy to find a very long list of former Catholics who saw the truth and became Protestants.

My wife and I became friends with a couple that had left the Roman Catholic Church and become protestants but to my dismay as well as others they still feel as if they have to do more for Christ and don't realize or else they can't quite grasp the difference of God not needing us to do for him but us that needs God. Anyway they got hooked up with a group around here that is trying to follow the Torah of the Old Testament. even down to the dietary laws from that time. I saw them at a breakfast establishment recently and they invited me to have breakfast with them. I almost laughed out oud when he ordered his eggs served with a hamburger patty instead of pork sausage which he used to eat regularly when I knew him before. They have done away with eating lobster and shrimp as well as catfish and other forms of sea foods. Again I blame all of this on the Catholic upbringing that they both had where they fact that they aren't good enough and have to do these things to make themselves acceptable. They just can't accept the fact that Christ made us acceptable to him not the other way around we can never do enough to makes us acceptable to God because our righteousness is as filthy rags to Him. I see that same sense of trying to do enough to be good enough to God in both Radiance3 as well as Doc110 and even PadreMike. It is a shame we cannot have a discussion about just the scriptures with out them ducking and hiding behind their Church's traditions and oral traditions. I guess its because they don't belive the scriptures just their traditions is all.

The Catholic church doesn't want people to think but to blindly accept what they are told. I have no problem with them posting since people will make up their own mind. Man is prideful. It's something IMO that we won't totally defeat here on earth.

Its too bad what happened to your friends. Its never too late for them though.

It would be nice to have a Biblical discussion but too many Catholics place more important on the words of man than Scripture because thats what they're told to do.

I'll tell you one more time. Sola Scriptura is not a gospel nor is it a Bible. Can you understand that? It means Scripture is sufficient as the supreme authority for all spiritual matters. You keep pasting in a sentence that doesn't even make sense.

Cardinal Newman said, "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant." Why don't more Protestant historians become Catholic?
Michelle Arnold August 04, 2011

Full Question
John Henry Cardinal Newman once said, "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant." If that is the case, why are there so many Protestant church historians, even patristics scholars, who never join the Catholic Church?

Answer
Newman’s maxim is not intended to be a "rule" that those Protestants versed in Church history "must" enter the Catholic Church. It is a general observation that Church history argues against Protestantism and that those Protestants who study history deeply many times realize that the Catholic Church is the true Church.

Ultimately, belief in the truth of Catholicism is a gift of faith given by God that must be accepted and acted upon by the recipient in order for the recipient to become Catholic.

With Protestant historians, it may be that some, for whatever reason of divine Providence, were not given that gift; or that those who were given that gift did not accept it or act upon it for some reason.

We must commend such people to God’s mercy, trusting that if these individuals follow him to the best of their ability according to the light of truth that they have, it may be possible for them to achieve salvation (cf. Lumen Gentium, 16).
