Unintended Consequences

I saw this headline today:"Pope Francis took on Trump over the caravan and it ended with one shocking outcome." (Renewed Right.com) I read the whole article, waiting for the shocking outcome. Waiting, waiting, waiting but never found. This really irks me. This kind of headline, while not an outright lie, is misleading.
There are hundreds of these headlines every day. If I am a person who doesn't have a lot of time on my hands, I scan the headlines and draw my conclusion. If I see 5 headlines that say George Soros is funding the caravan, then I may believe it. So I go on my social media pages and repeat what I saw. So now a lot more people pass on this piece of news.
Now let's apply a little common sense to that meme: you would think Soros could have found some t***sportation for those folks in the caravan. He could have saved big bucks on food and water if they could just get here sooner.
Besides that, some of them are dropping out because the journey is so grueling. He's going to look really foolish if only 200 make it to the border.
So will 15000 troops waiting to greet them.

It's click bait. The websites associated with these types of headlines get money for every time someone clicks on their site.

I agree with your displeasure over "click bait." However, the caravan you think will be so very small.... well they are less than 700 miles to the Texas border. Plus there are 3 more caravans following the front leaders. The front caravan has women and children..... but the ones following is primarily men in the prime of life. Women and children were put out front to soften the US stance...to weaken our resolve.

Since the Pope is not a citizen of the USA I really do not care what he thinks.

There is nothing illegal about walking up to a border crossing and asking for asylum!

It is certainly not illegal to ask for asylum, but getting it is another thing altogether.

Asylum is a protection granted to foreign nationals already in the United States or at the border who meet the international law definition of a “refugee.” The United Nations 1951 Convention and 1967 Protocol define a refugee as a person who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her home country, and cannot obtain protection in that country, due to past persecution or a well-founded fear of being persecuted in the future "on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion." Congress incorporated this definition into U.S. i*********n l*w in the Refugee Act of 1980.

Noncitizens who are encountered by, or present themselves to, a U.S. official at a port of entry or near the border are subject to expedited removal, an accelerated process which authorizes DHS to perform rapid deportations of certain individuals.

To ensure that the United States does not violate international and domestic laws by returning individuals to countries where their life or liberty may be at risk, the credible fear and reasonable fear screening processes are available to asylum seekers in expedited removal processes. These screening processes require the asylum seeker to provide a credible or reasonable probability that if he or she is returned to their home country, they will be persecuted, tortured, or even executed based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.

IOW, poverty, economic circumstances, or unemployment do not meet the criteria for granting asylum.

The asylum process can take years to conclude. In some cases, a person may file his or her application and receive a hearing or interview date years in the future.

Pope Francis needs to get his own house in order before he tells our President what to do.
