A true story and one that is really getting to me.

About a month ago I was on my usual morning walk when a young boxer puppy ran up to me and I was happy to pet him and ask him where he belonged. And I hadn't realized it at the time but I was only about 40 feet from Preston Road (a busy highway at that time) when he broke from my hand and ran right into the middle of the street. Well before I could get to him a white truck smacked him and knocked him into the next lane where he promptly got hit several times more. Well, there wasn't much I could do as I was in a walker and 40 feet was much more than I could manage. I chalked that one as bad luck for the puppy but tonite my wife and I were going out to eat when we saw something lying in the road. At first glance, I thought it was a turtle as they are fairly common so my wife stopped and when she did I could tell it was a little Yorky. This one I could help so I ran out and picked it up and we took it as fast as we could to our Vet which was only a couple miles away. Well, he closed at 7 and we just managed to make it. We stayed there a couple of hours and I needed to get home to take some medications and when we got there, there was a message and the little fellow didn't make it.

I am 64 years old and have seen plenty of road k**l but never witnessed pets dying right in front of me. Now the moral to this story is please, please keep your pets securely in your house or in yards where no harm can come to them. Both were hit at times when owners, either waking up or just getting home, put their dogs in the yards to go to the bathroom and I'm sure gates were either inadvertently left open or they managed to get out somehow. All I'm saying is that my heart is really ready to burst and I can't take this anymore. Please, no more road k**l for this guy. It is such a horrible, horrible way them to go.

Thanks for posting this Peter. Owning a pet carries the responsibility of taking care and safeguarding the pet. If a pet owner is unwilling or unable to do so, her or she should find a good home for the animal. It's very distressing to read about the two animals that died, and the manner in which they did.

I am truly sorry for your experience, we can't save them all. However, this is one thing we can agree on, People, please keep your pets safe! No animal should die like this story describes.

Good post, Peter. Even in rural areas, many neglect the safety/welfare of their pets. I see it all the time.

All dogs go to heaven.

I'm more concerned about you.

You're only 64 and already on a walker and medication.

Had I known you were in such poor health, I wouldn't have been so hard on you.

So take it easy old Goober and don't be hobbling out in the streets trying to rescue mutts.

Because atheists don't get the same welcome as dogs do in heaven.

Yeah, Pete, that sucks. I've seen more than my fair share of it, and even accidentally run over a couple myself. It hurts a man's heart, but, it is what it is. Sometimes things happen even when people are being responsible, and doing what's right. I once had a chihuahua snatched from my yard by a large owl with me standing less than 20 feet away. Boy, that was a hard pill to swallow!
The dogs we have now are trained to not leave the yard unless invited. It isn't easy to teach them to overcome their urge to go out, and "check the mail", but it can be done.

Dogs do go to Heaven I can vouch for that been there myself and come back, allowing me to be the Son of Jesus which is not blasphemy, were all the child of Christ it's just that most forges about it, or maybe their not dogs like me, maybe their only pusseys.

I was chasing this cat once it sprung deliberately under a semitrailer thinking it was smart because I would be too chicken to follow, big mistake, I got the furry little critter held firm between my teeth, and that pussy was the only one ever listed in heaven, probably because Ahura Mazda thought she was with me.

I know how you feel. I am a pet owner and have always taught that having a pet isn't any different than having a child it is dependent on you for its whole life while children (we hope) leave the nest at some point. There are medical expenses food cost and they above all need attention and love so it's important that the pet owner acquire the right kind of pet if your older a quieter sedate pet that doesn't need a lot of exercise for active people an active pet would be better and could keep up with its family. Dogs are pack animals once it is bonded with its family it is to painful to watch the pain and misery they go through when thrown away like garbage. Believe it OR not people they have feelings and their hearts CAN BE BROKEN

Good clip but bad outcome. I have an 11 year old Lhasa Apso and I think I would go crazy if something like that happened to him. He has diabetes and requires a lot of care including special food and two insulin shots a day but who cares if you love him. When outside I don't let him out of my sight.

PeterS, that was a nice clip even though with some sadness. I am 80 years old and have an 11 year old Lhasa Apso and just like all pet owners love him so much. He has diabetes which necessitates two shots of insulin daily and a close watch on his food. I watch him closely when outside never letting him out of my sight. I know I will struggle when his time comes and am dreading that day.
