I have a little to add to the church vs. pagan thing. I had read about this happening but I did get the opportunity to view an ancient altar tht had been shipped from UK. I looked closely to actually see what the book was saying and, sure enough, there were pagan symbols incorporated into the artistic carving on the altar. As it WAS the pagans (the common people) who were building the churches and cathedrals and these buildings were being erected on pagan sacred ground, they always incorporated their own gods or symbols of their gods into the architecture. The church's people, not knowing much about pagan faith, accepted these solely as artistic renderings. As an example: The Green Man which is a face surrounded by leaves.
