If your friend has a credible claim I think it is everyone's obligation to explore it. I was living in Chapel Hill in North Carolina in 1980. Was he there? Does he have a record of having spoken with his spouse and therapist about the incident?
I completely understand how many are uncomfortable with the timing of this revelation. But all abuse accusations deserve to be explored.
