An open mind: "To avoid making a judgment or decision about things before thoroughly considering them." A rather meaningless definition. How does one consider them? Without our beliefs or values? Can those considerations possibly be left or Right neutral, religiously or philosophically neutral, truly objective. Then what is the objective? Of course, there are emotional knee-jerk responses to certain issues and blind party or group loyalty that is wrong. Yet how open-minded should a Christian be about, say, a******n? Do they need to "thoroughly consider" the issue from other viewpoints? Is there a way to look at the subject from a passive point of view?

Independents, poster child it seems for being open-minded, are mostly thought of as fence-sitters, wishy-washy, no spine. No clear values as everything is on the table. Let's talk.

In this highly d******e age between Left and Right, any even minor deviance from the party-line is taken as betrayal. No questioning. No compromise. No cooperation. Black is black and white is white for both across the aisle. Having an open mind is subterfuge, a lack of commitment to wh**ever cause. What's there to "thoroughly consider"?

Not making a judgment against against Kavanaugh or his accuser until all the facts are in is keeping an open mind. On subjects like this an open mind is just basic human decency to withhold judgment. Yet I feel we need to "thoroughly consider" many more things.

Interesting. I grew up in something of a phenomenon in the center of the Bronx in the 50s and 60s: totally segregated. It was called Parkchester, a private housing project owned by Meltlife. It was idyllic, not for the lack of minorities but for all the green grass and trees and playgrounds and organized activities and endless peers and maintenance and security and...commonality. This was just life as it was. I never remember any r****t comments about life there. The largest congregation of Second Generation of immigrants in a single place. 64% went to college. Jews, Italians, and Irish mostly. A model of immigration.

I have to be honest in saying that I find it difficult to accept or respect Islam as a religion. It is more like a Guy's Club, with terrible dues. I grew up with a good-provider father that beat his wife. It made me an adamant feminist, of sorts. My problem is the 1st Amendment, religious freedom. And 2 billion people of Islam faith: what do you do with that? A small fraction are terrorists...today. Yet their religion relinquishes e******y: it will never happen for women by their God's command. Making a case against Islam in this country could come back to haunt any religion, including Christianity. Our nation is growing in plurality. Polls show Christianity on the wane. What to do?
