WE couldn't stop it at this point even if it were caused by man. The cycle is turned and now has momentum. Now, as warming continues, methane is going to be released in huge amounts. It is 25 times more of a green house gas than CO2. I think.
Cows give off methane.
You are right on with the thawing of permafrost way to much will be released at once.
If only there we away to capture most of it if could be used as fuel.
I have been playing with thoughts in my mind in how to deal with the issue.
We can use the oceans & seas to both heat & cool the planet.
It would have to be done to balance th over all temperatures in the bodies of water.
Cooling the surface by bring up colder water from below to cool the suface in areas where hurricanes form.
Only a couple of degrees would make a big impact on weaking hurricanes.
It could even be done during winter months.
Ships that have pumps to lay a layer of colder water on the suface or spray a mist when air temperature is lower than the water temperature.
This could mean an over all warming of the ocean as it is just a replacement of the water.
To balance the over all posible warming efffect of the water.
Creating snow fall in the artic would help cool the artic regions.
Using salt water to make snow.
Needs to have the impact of how salt in the snow will act.
I think it has been shown that the artic regions are warming faster than other areas.
So any help we give to cooling will have a reasonable impact on the area.
The cost of this could all be covered by money saved from less destructive storms in the Atlantic.
We have the types of ships & pumps needed now.
Snow is made in many place.
Small trial runs can be done with out huge sums of money.
There would be an economic gain in related industries.
