Liberals will be outraged, Conservatives will grin. (Be honest, Righties, ain't that the t***h? He got what you think he actually deserved in a slow and painful death for raping and k*****g a seven year old girl; heck, it should have been worse. A carelessness about the Constitution on "cruel and unusual punishment" out of mind. It is a far, far more difficult thing to do, and more humane and in keeping with the Law of the Land, to protest such a thing--in the face of outrage over such a horrific act and needed just desserts. Who could like someone that could find anything wrong in that state murder of that scum? Seems heartless, despite it protects all citizens of this country.)

I see this as one of the fundamental differences between those two sides—and it tells a far bigger and fundamental story about the two ideologies. It could be broken down to a simple formula: The Right has simple and uncomplicated beliefs, and the Left has complicated and difficult beliefs. This is a somewhat fair appraisal, but it is a bit more complicated.

The fact the Left appears to have grey areas is condemned by the Right. The fact the Right appears to have nothing but Black and White views is condemned by the Left. Take the movie "Open Range" and the series "Lonesome Dove." (Two of the greatest shows ever aired. I have seen both maybe maybe 4 or 5 times.) The Right is thrilled by the Frontier Justice and the Left is conflicted (maybe?). Personally, I would love to relax into the ease of the Right. To be so sure would be such a great relief. To watch those shows with full agreement. I do love their strength of character, courage, determination, seeming everyday decency and honor, loyalty, sacrifice, integrity: to know and possibly be friends with men of such great character would be an honor. Yet all of them disgraced the Law of the Land. Frontier Injustice. Vigilante vengeance. In a similar vein, it appears none of them would be against water-boarding or other extra-legal activity by police to get a conviction for people known to be guilty freed by a technicality: the Constitution not even a second thought.

I'm a righty. I'm not a fan of the death penalty whether the k**ler suffers as much as his victim or not. I think it's unequally applied. Investigators make mistakes. DAs are lawyers turned politician! That's a bad combination. People confess to things they never did...you'd be surprised how often.

Hopefully Trump will get somewhere with prison reform. Twice now they've had a big powwow. Trump is serious about it. Obama couldn't be bothered with it. Prison is part of government and if it was government Obama wanted it BIGGER. So did Klinton.

Very well-reasoned approach. I, too, hope Trump will succeed in reform.

I do too. He wants to reform, which is a huge part of the resistance I see...people who liked the status quo and wanted to keep it at all costs.

I may be wrong, but I find the resistance solely on the Right: be tough on crime. Which is ridiculous when keeping men from recidivism, you deny their chance to be a productive citizen again, regain their rights. Counter-productive.

First, I have the complete collection of Lonesome Dove. In fact this past Saturday night I watched the one with Robert Duval and Tommy Lee Jones again. You can not compare then with now. We live in the county. There are eight houses on my road that is about ten miles long. My nearest neighbor is a half a mile away. If something goes down, a robber, a drunk or a spot lighter I have to deal with it. Even had someone trying to steal my two pigs. I call 911 but it may take the County an hour to get there. My Shotgun and one of my Rifles are in a rack over my bedroom door, the shells are kept separate. Just the way it is. Second, I'm conservative. I do believe that we need Prison Reform. The system is totally jacked up. It was good that the President had a conference with leaders from different factions to find solutions. Maybe its a start. Third, I don't give a dead rats ass that he choked and turned purple. I hope that every time he was gasping for air he was thinking of what that little girl that he raped went through ! I've been through two wars, my worst nightmare is that some monster does this to my baby girl and she is calling for her Papa. No, I have no compassion. I believe that we should have public h*****gs. Not twenty or thirty years after the crime. But as soon as the guilty verdict is handed down. Maybe when people see that there is a payment for their crime instead of the taxpayer paying for their life till their death, however that maybe. There may be a change.

Sounds about right to me. Figuring out whether a criminal is ready to rejoin society, however, is a serious challenge. If you are wrong you will have caused untold suffering in society, when you had the power to prevent it. If you err on the side of caution, you may deny society a worthwhile contributor. Such decisions are imprecise gambles.

Amen and Amen I am with you 1000% on this. I also agree that the execution should be as soon as possible after the conviction. Will we make a mistake the answer is yes but hopefully we will send the message to our youth that if you do one of these crimes the end will come sooner rather than later or never.
