Mueller’s job was to investigate Russian interference in the e******n. At this point, he’s indicted, arrested or flipped a lot of bad guys. They’ve found the hackers that tried to influence the e******n. They’ve found a lot of American political operatives who have questionable relationships with Russia, and probably played some role in helping the Russians to influence the e******n. He’s even described Julian Assange’s role.

So the answer to your first question is: it already has. We have been attacked by foreign adversary and they have hurt us and we caught them and we’re bringing them to justice. That’s incredibly meaningful — this is the first battle in a new kind of war. We’re not winning, but the FBI is on our side and making progress.

Your second question is tougher, because it requires flat-out speculation. But you asked. There’s two possibilities. (1) He’s saving the president for last. (2) The president didn’t exactly participate after all.

The first case is the one most liberals are expecting. We’ve all seen the circumstantial evidence — the president’s consistent and unf**gging support of Russia and Vladimir Putin, and his antagonism towards every one of Russia’s enemies. There’s also a cui bono argument — clearly it was in Trump’s interest to have a powerful and intelligent propaganda machine fighting on his behalf.

Neither of these arguments are proof, of course. It’s possible that Trump’s rhetoric is just more noise from a man who enjoys the attention and thrives on drama. He says a lot of contrarian, obnoxious, dramatic, contradictory and thoughtless things. He does not appear to think deeply about any of his opinions and appears to be very easily influenced, as when he tweets out misinformation that he heard on TV or comes out of so many meetings with a changed opinion. It’s possible that Russia is able to use him to their advantage just by sending people to talk to him and funneling bad information and advice to him. In that case Trump is not guilty of a crime, just guilty of not being very smart. He could be just an unwitting tool of Russia’s ongoing propaganda war.
