I would like to post an apology to everyone and all on OPP. Last night I posted that a President could not pardon themselves. I was wrong. Today I went back to the Constitution, re-read Article II, Section II, Clause I. The President...shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment. This is a broad stroke. As stated, it would imply that a President could pardon themselves except for treason. That being said, I believe that any President that would chose to result to this course of action would be in betrayal of the Oath of Office. Once again my apologies. I should have researched before I posted.

It's a big person that admits a mistake.

BTW..... Where did you get the idea that POTUS cannot pardon himself for treason?

Treason. Good question. I will have to go back and find this in the Constitution. Common sense would lead us to believe that when a President takes the oath of office. Swears on a Bible to uphold the Constitution, then commits treason against that oath. Why would that President have the power to grant pardon on his actions ? If this was Constitutional, then a President could do what ever they wanted, knowing that they could always pardon themselves. Is this not like being a KING ? quote=Super Dave]It's a big person that admits a mistake.

I still don't think a President can pardon himself.

The Constitution would have been 1000s of pages long if they closed every loophole and drilled down every power of the 3 branches.

The Constitution clearly defines POTUS's pardon power. The fact that they listed this one exception (impeachment) and scope (crimes against America) and no others shows that they thoughtfully and specifically limited pardon power and there is no other limitations.

Also note this is a plenary power. Congress and SCOTUS do not have authority to review, or need to consent.

The pardon power is designed to be broad as an emergency safeguard.

Clinton pardoned terrorists. Obama pardoned drug dealers. The pardon power is easy to abuse, and nobody can do anything about it.

The Constitution was written so that any literate citizen could understand it. Brilliant idea.

No apology needed. Some around here have never opened their mouths without spreading stupid. I shouldn't have to make a list.

You have nothing to apologize for,Presidents[ especially Trump] can"PARTON" themselves if they want ,they just can't PARDON themselves.
