I was going to say that it was a portrait of his soul, but that is wrong. A snake is neither evil or good, it is just a snake with no choice on how it behaves. A human being as a choice, and therefore a person has the right, and actually the obligation to declare evil what it is, the evil from the force of evil that is out to destroy all good things.
