A Wisconsin sheriff sounded off on what he believes to be the “root cause” of mass shootings in the U.S., and called on parents to discipline their children more effectively.

Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt penned a Facebook post arguing that a major cause of mass shootings may be a radical culture shift that has occurred in the U.S. over the years — a culture shift caused by weak parenting.

“Following every mass k*****g, I ask myself, what has happened to our society?” Schmidt wrote. “I also wonder what the solution is to ensure our families do not become future victims.”

The Wisconsin sheriff pointed out how “years ago, people would go to school and have hunting rifles in their vehicles,” but “mass violence in schools and other locations did not happen as in society today.”

He added that there is a “root cause” fueling the drastic shift that has occurred over the years, and that “there is no quick and easy solution” to stop it.

“It’s my belief that the root cause starts with our youth lacking basic sk**ls including respect for authority figures like parents and teachers, the ability to cope with conflict and the ability to handle rejection,” Schmidt stated.

Schmidt added that substance abuse and mental health problems are also a driving factor but noted that “it is imperative that we raise our children in a manner that instills respect for authority.”

According to Schmidt, every child needs to face “disappointment” at some point in his or her life in order to build character and develop a basic understanding of how to handle adversity.
Do you agree with Sheriff Schmidt that the "root cause" of mass shootings is a lack of respect for authority in children?

“While no one wants their child to ever be disappointed or upset, when they are young, they need to face conflict and disappointment and learn to resolve it appropriately under the guidance of adults,” the sheriff wrote.

He continued: “When youth are not taught how to handle difficult situations, they must find their own way to cope, which without guidance may be result in unhealthy or even dangerous future behavior.”

Schmidt explained that his motive behind penning the piece was not place blame. Rather, he said he hopes to start a conversation that could lead to an effective solution.

However, with gun control being the end-all solution touted by the left, he chimed in with his thoughts on the matter.

“Many have strong opinions about gun control but realistically gun control will do nothing more than place a very small band aid on a much bigger problem,” he stated in his conclusion.

And Schmidt may have a point. A Crime Prevention Research Center study that used data from 1950 through July 10, 2016 showed that 98.4 percent of mass shootings have occurred in areas where guns are banned.

The sheriff’s post received a lot of positive feedback on social media, according to The Washington Times.

One Facebook user wrote: “Very well said…….and maybe putting God and religion back in our life could help the situation.”

Another user thanked Schmidt for refraining from placing the blame on firearms.

“Thank you for recognizing the true problem and not just focusing on a gun control agenda like some of your colleagues around the country,” the user wrote. “Like you said, it is a very complex issue.”

I was born in 1950... And our parents never - not ever - laid a hand on us... Guns were not a part of our household... But respect for others was very important... My father said, "No one has to earn your respect. They have to earn your disrespect. And only when they earn your disrespect do they have to do things to regain your respect."

I have lived my entire life with my father's thoughts in mind... And everyone I've known, regardless of race, creed, color. and religion have found me to be a good, caring person... And they've told me so...

Betta, In the old days, if we did some thing wrong or didn't do something right, whoever was an authority figure would smack us, and when we got home, if our parents found out that teacher or neighbor smacked us, they didn't report it to the police, they'd smack us for getting into trouble with the teacher, neighbor, or who ever. I'm not suggesting that any one should be able to beat up any kid, but a little discipline nd direction couldn't be as bad as what's going on today.Could ALL THIS MESS be connected to the banning of the Bible and Prayer in public places in the 60's?

That wonderful sheriff of yours ignores what is the principle cause to focus on the outliers. That's all wonderful but as I pointed out there are countries that are far more liberal than we are and don't have near the problem with have with mass shootings--and this would even include terrorism. That right there should tell anyone who is objective that their finger pointing at liberals is going to be off base. Take the guns out of all those mentally ill hands and mass shooting is no longer a problem. But so long as there is a way they can get assault style rifles the problem is going to exist and no amount of liberal h**e will change that--though h**e you certainly may...

I never thought of it the way you are inferring my meaning. Single parent caused mental illness. An interesting notion. We are all generalizing here, yes no ? The Las Vegas shooter, other than being crazy, does not fit the general pattern for two primary reasons. First he was not a school shooter. Second he was not young. He is an exception to the pattern and I think he should be thrown out of the discussion.

Which brings me back to my original premise. Most of these School shooters are young men with no Strong Male Parent figure. When I was growing up one of the potent threats a neighbor could make to us was to say, " I'm going to tell your Father. " Most of the Fathers in my neighborhoods would physically punish any of the young men who seriously misbehaved. Openly defying your Father was not even a hint of a thought. My point is that these shooters usually do not have that strong Father in their lives that keeps them from listening to the voices in their heads.

These school shooters do not just snap one day. They have to build up their violent acts until they commit murder. A strong Father would intervene long before they got to the murder stage, and he sure would not allow his damaged little snowflake access to guns.

If we could change welfare to reward the two parent family over the single parent family and thus encourage marriage instead of uncontrolled breading we would have a shot at correcting this problem. I know that the democrats would be beside themselves if we would dare reverse LBJ and his proclamation about having b****s v****g democrat for 200 years but we have to do something.

I'd like to see the stats on welfare women with multiple children by more than 1 father.

You could start by looking at the NFL and the NBA for all of the black players with multiple children from multiple women.
B****s seem to be the most prevalent followed by illegal hispanics and then other races.
I guess you could get that info from welfare lists but don't know where you obtain that info.

Boys in particular need a strong stable Father in their lives. The standard heterosexual family unit where both Mother and Father fulfill their roles in parenting is the best case. Unfortunately many parents, particularly the Fathers do not show up for their most important job in life. When they do show up and the kid has a mental illness they do not become School Shooters.

I think the sheriff is dead on. I grew up on a farm deep in South Georgia. We were raised to respect the earth, all people, animals, property. We were taught to respect ourselves, constantly encouraged to do our best, if we failed at something, encouraged to keep trying. We ate wh**ever was put on the table. If you did not eat it, it would be on your plate every meal until you did. We knew when bad years happened, meat would be scarce, homemade ice cream would not be seen. We also knew there were people in worse shape & we would be sharing what we had w/ them. It was just understood that is the way things are. We wore hand me down clothes, never thought anything about it. We were not the center of attention @ family gatherings, never interrupted an adult conversation. We were loved & cared for more than most of us realized until years later.

We were taught responsibility. We had chores that were necessary for our survival. The animals had to fed, milked, tools & equipment had to be cleaned & oiled. Having a bad day was no excuse, it is too cold, wet, hot was unthinkable. We did not have central heat or air. We did not have tv, only a party line telephone. If we did something wrong we learned quickly to admit it & get over it, make it right. If others were involved, you kept your mouth shut after the first time you tried to use that as an excuse.

This will no doubt upset some readers but it was a big part of our lives. We believed in God. We believed in the Ten Commandments. If they weren’t in the Bible, Liberals probably would figure out they are a good basis for Humanity.

We were not angels, we all stretched the reins & paid the consequences. We got in fights, got over it. If we got paddled @ school, we got switched or spanked when we got home.

We were responsible for our families’ names. That was a burden & an honor put on us early.

I have been employing people since I was 16. I am 70 now, still working 50-60 hours/wk, have seen first hand the dramatic changes in our culture, work ethic, entitlement philosophy taking presedence over responsibility. I have spend 100’s of hours, millions of dollars trying to make a difference working w/ schools from middle school through colleges & tech schools. Our country is booming now & we do not have competent employees. Welders are in great demand, good ones can make $80,000-$100,000/year but kids think it is too dirty which it is not these days w/ cooled helmets, all kinds of air filtration, same thing for plumbers, tool & die makers, machinists, all the trades needed to support manufacturing. We have engineers who have no idea of how to make what they design because they have never turned on a mill or lathe, much less made anything on one. They come up w/ absolutely fantastic solutions on a computer screen but have no clue of how to make it, get their feelings hurt when someone tells them it won’t work. They still expect excellent reviews & raises because they spent so much time on a project.

Yes this has something to do w/ gun violence. These kids do not have any loadstone in their lives, might be no father, no mother, parents more concerned about other things, no discipline, misdiagnosis of problems, drugs prescribed instead of “No you cannot drink all the soda you want to”.

I am really ill about what FL did, not one mention of limited access to schools. If we have raised a generation of kids who are intimidated, threatened by metal detectors, how are they going to fit ito jobs that require flying, going in government buildings?

I do not applaud kids insulting senators & a president like they have a right to. They have been hurt, but they are still kids. They are to dumb to realize they are being had & The State of Florida politicians are just as dumb.
