IS THE USA GOVERNMENT SELLING ASSAULT RIFLES TO CIVILIANS
First let us determine just exactly what an assault rifle really is. It is NOT an AR 15, a real assault rifle will fire in fully automatic mode, which a AR-15 cannot do. Just because they look alike does not mean they are alike. Picture a real $100 dollar bill and beside it there is a counterfeit $100 dollar bill, looks identical, right? Take them to a pro down at the bank and they will show you the difference.

Now lets look at the power of this AR-15, sure it fires the same round as the M-16, which is basically a .223 round, A 55 grain bullet. This round was developed first to be used as a varmint round, coyotes, fox etc. Many states do not allow this round to be used for deer hunting purposes because of its size. The round fires the 55 grain bullet at a little over 3100 feet per second muzzle velocity (MV). about 12-1300 pounds energy. as a matter of fact not long ago some special ops guys in the middle east were complaining that this round was not doing a very good job of stopping the bad guys and pulled some m-14s out of moth balls because if fired the 7.62 nato round. A much more effective round.
Now let us look at another "Assault Weapon" In the early 1940ties, A new rifle was developed for in close fighting. It is called the M1-carbine. This rifle saw extensive usage in Europe, in the pacific theater, in Korea, and some in Vietnam and is still being used in some countrys today. Some came with a folding stock, will take a 30 round magazine of which there are plenty. This rifle fired a .30 cal round, a 110 grain bullet at 1990 FPS MV, had about 950-1000 pounds of energy, about 33% more power than a .357 magnum pistol round, Very lethal, think Bugsy Siegel,This old rifle will shoot as fast as any AR-15, as it is a semi-auto rifle also.
Now after the Korean war, our government had a huge surplus of these weapons so they, thru CPM,* started selling them to the general public at very cheap prices (20-30 dollars) and no one had to do a background check, They even gave some to some gun clubs as their idea was to get young men to do a lot of shooting because they knew that if they needed soldiers again for combat, that men already familiar with guns made a lot better front line soldiers. There have been many studies on this.
I wonder what will happen if and when someone figures out that with a 12ga pump shotgun you can put 105 >32 cal balls in the air in less than 4 seconds, or they use #4 buckshot, .224 diameter, and put 210 round in the air in the same time frame.
* Civilian marksmanship Program, a program started in 1916 by the US Army to put these guns in the publics hands for training. This program is still ongoing, .They no longer have any carbines, but lots of the M1 garand, just read where there is another 80,000 garands coming in from the far east.

I have NEVER seen an M1 Garand that could take a 30 round magazine. (Possibly the M1 Carbine, but I don't remember.) They use an 8 round clip, not a magazine. Also, they came out in the late 30's. A folding stock, not on your life. The BAR uses the same ammo as the M1 and does utilize a magazine, but the only ones I am familiar with used a 20 round magazine. I know, I used one in Korea.
