My dad was a quarter horse guy too, when I was I about 9 he bought a beast of a horse. Not sure of the pedigree but he was about 16 hands and crossed with appaloosa. Very spirited. My dad never rode him that I can remember. He hired a horse guy to work with him. One day he saddled him and got on and bam that horse took off and ran like the wind. Too much for our family and my dad sold him, but he was a handsome devil and the soul to match.

When I was a kid, no one who knew horses would own a app or a paint. They were just to crazy. But today they have been crossed enough with good stock that they aren't so hot blooded and make good horses. Your dad was a smart man. Some folks would say they were like "bad" women. Pretty to look at, but useless.

Man o War, still have the book. Sea Biscuit is another Cinderella horse. We're it not for the 73 belmont, both could be the greatest, but for me, it's Big Red. When you replay that race and pit him against any other in history, they just can't cut it, and it's just amazing to watch him blow Sham away.

Many years ago I had an opportunity to buy a print of Secretariat signed by penny chenery, the owner, lucien lauren, the trainer, and Ron turcotte the jockey. It's one of my favorite pieces of sports memorabilia.

I'm so glad you took advantage of the opportunity.

If memory serves, that was Secretariat. Too bad he didn't produce another like him.

The story of Sea Biscuit is fascinating. I have the book and plan to re-read it. It was quite moving considering he was used as a draw horse for a period.

I'd like to share with you one experience I will never forget. I believe this took place in the late 60s. I more appreciated the pacer/trotter races. I believe it was at Yonkers Racetrack and was the last race of the king of trotters. I can only remember that the star's name was Admiral ___ or ___ Admiral. There were no odds to speak of - possibly 1/1. I wasn't interested and, being a New Yorker, I am always on the side of the underdog. So, I looked through the scratch sheet and, because of the name, I chose Silver Song.

At the beginning of the race Silver Song broke and had to fall behind the crowd. Figuring he lost, I followed the head of the group. Coming around the bend, Silver Song began coming up on the other horses. Remember, he was behind the entire field. Well, it was most amazing as he was on the outside, he was passing everything on the track. Had it gone on a little longer, Silver Song would have won the race. I do believe that he was held back after having passed all, in order to make Admiral ___'s last race a win for him. Silver Song came in 2nd. I still recall the excitement and it brings me to tears.

With race horses, all they must work at is running fast. The Equestrians take a great deal of training. I'm sure you noticed the changes in tempos as well as the type of pace.

As an aside, I used to save my lunch money all week in order to go riding on Saturdays. I lived on after dinner mints for lunch. We had no choice of horses and I always regretted having to ride a trotter once. I rode English saddle and there was absolutely no possibility of posting.

No, they belonged to the Lone Ranger, Gene Autry, and Roy Rogers.
