Colorado shooting: 5 deputies shot, 1 fatally, in Douglas County
2:30 PM EST U.S.

CBS NEWS

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) in Colorado says a 29-year-old deputy was fatally shot and four others were injured while responding to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex early Sunday. Two civilians were also injured by the suspect's gunfire.

The deputies were called to a residence around 5:20 a.m. Sunday morning where they were immediately met with gunfire from the suspect, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said in a news conference Sunday.

The two civilians also suffered non-life threatening injuries, Spurlock said. The unidentified suspect, who was k**led in the exchange, was known to police but he did not have a criminal history. Spurlock said the suspect wielded a rifle and fired more than 100 rounds in the encounter.

The officer who was k**led was identified as a 29-year-old deputy who joined the force seven months ago. He is survived by his wife and two children.

"When I sat with her, I could see in her eyes that her life was over," Spurlock said, referring to the deputy's wife.

The FBI in Denver said it was ready to provide its "full support" to the DCSO.

Footage from the scene showed a heavy police presence, with numerous ambulances and police cars with their lights flashing.

President Trump offered his condolences to the shooting victims on Sunday. "We love our police and law enforcement -- God Bless them all!" Mr. Trump tweeted.

My deepest condolences to the victims of the terrible shooting in Douglas County @DCSheriff, and their families. We love our police and law enforcement - God Bless them all! #LESM

Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colorado) also offered his condolences, saying his "heart breaks for all of those affected" by the tragedy."

Gardner added: "Our law enforcement officers work tirelessly every day to keep our communities safe and today all of Colorado stands with our law enforcement community."

Our hearts always goes out to the men in blue who lose their lives unnecessarily. Domestic violence, is always a rough call. It was extremely lucky for the spouse that she wasn't injured or worse...

As far as I've read, it was a domestic abuse call....but it was an ambush on 5 officers. 4 injured....and 1 fatally injured. This is how they set these officers up. They come to help and protect citizens and some sick, nutcase opens fire on them. Sad...very, very sad!!

I wish I knew that these type of tragedies could be prevented...but, I don't know how that could be accomplished. Unfortunately, people determined to create havoc or chaos will continue to do so.

So sad for the families of injured/slain officers.

Inasmuch as the shootings were against our brave LEO's there will be no outcry from the gun grabbers.

It is very sad Slat. The officer was only 29 with a wife and 2 young children at home. Their world is now torn apart.....

This may be a naive suggestion- but can't our police be provided with some type of kevlar (sp?) body protection when being called for help in these type of incidents...especially if its a suspected set up to commit random violence on law enforcement?

Another Officer Ambushed....Leaves Behind a Wife and Two Young Children

This kind of Terrible Tragedy, has become far Too Common, & Originated Over The Eight
Year's of The R****t, Muslim, Kenyan, C*******t, OBAMA. When I, as a kid growing up in South Florida, there was very, little Crime
of any kind, especially Assault's on Our Well Respected, & Admired Sheriff's Deputies. Back
Then, The Police Had, "The Fleeing Felon Law", on
their side, & could legally shoot or K**l, Any Running, or escaping Felon. Officer's also had a
Lot More Leeway, With The Use Of Wh**ever Force,They Required, to control any Arrestee!!!
Everyone I Knew, Appreciated our Lawmen. The
entire Country, seem's to have started, to go to
"Hell in a Hand-basket", since 1954, & On a Steady Decline, Ever Sense!! I hope to GOD,
President Trump, can "Turn Thing's Around", &
start America Back To "HER" Christian, & Powerful "ROOT'S!?

Police are given body armour in most cases it’s their choice whether or not to wear it. While I was in law enforcement I wore mine religiously. Body armour in most cases won’t stop a rifle bullet unless it hits the chest or back plate. They do a good job on pistol bullets.

Wore body armour 14 months in Iraq, 9 months in Afghanistan. Before any mission, As PLT Sarge I would do a PCC "Pre Combat Check" Then my LT and I would do a PCI "Pre Combat Inspection". Every issued piece of body armour had to be worn. Pain in the ass, all the s**t together weighed about 50 pounds. Then throw on your Ruck that most time weighed about a 100 pounds. Then the temp is 130 degree. Wonder why my knees and back hurt.

Do you believe its possible that a lighter weight body armour could be designed?
