When do you have a right to be offended?

"If I could work my will," said Scrooge indignantly, "Every i***t who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart."

I have a neighbor, G*d love him! He is a nudist and just recently, he had to go to court over his habit of living bare! It seems that a woman, uninvited or anticipated, went to his house and he greeted her with a smile... nothing more. She filed a court document saying his nudity offended her. He won the case, you see the key was...she was not invited to his home.

A second group of women filed a court complaint. It seems they wanted to protest our President's leaked tape. They appeared on the courthouse sidewalk and took off their tops.... so, they were bare with the exception of their unique hats. Some men took notice of how round, flat, drooping, or perky the protesters seemed to be. Those women then filed a court claim that the men were inappropriate in their response. Case has not be adjudicated yet.

Now having set the tone.... a few people on OPP have sent a message to those who are well wishers of Christmas, saying it offends them. My question.... do they have a right to be offended? Should we be forced to take sensitivity training so we avoid any mention of religion? Any mention of a holiday? Should OPP become void of good cheer and well wishes? Or does that two or three people have a right to demand we Cease and Desist feeling happy and wanting to share the joy?

What say you?

I have the right to be offended, and to offend others. Generally I try not to offend others, and it takes a lot to really offend me, it is easier to just ignore those who choose to insult others.

You indeed have a right to your emotions, and being offended is an emotion. That was not my aim in this thread.... at what point does your right, even if you place yourself in a situation where you may be offended, supered my rights? There are some actions that should be ranked as offensive..... I can think of a few dozen off the top of my head, but I can not see how wishing someone Merry Christmas should be included in that list.

Nor can I but then I am not a "progressive" nor am I a snow flake (I won't go into what other kind of flake I might be, I will leave that up to those who read my comments)

Right before Christmas, I had many of my Democrat friends over for a small party. Each had well wishes for the New Year..and even though they know I am Jewish, each wished me a Merry Christmas. So, I am grateful for your wishes... although you may want to adjust the strength of your eggnog, Christmas was this past Monday. Happy New Year, Mark! I hope this year will bring you joy, love, and prosperity!

I am with you.... It takes a lot to offend me. But, I admit, there are some things that are innately offensive.

Seriously? People here have been offended by all of the Merry Christmasing going on here? You're kidding, right?
Do they have that right? Sure! But they also have the right, and ability not to click on this site. I'm sure there are many less friendly, less offensive sites they can click on, and have all of the cold, impersonal, friendless exchanges they want.
So, in the spirit of offending them, let me just give you a pre-emptive Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday, Happy Independence Day, Happy any other day that offends these pathetic creatures!!

Oh! And another thing! I consider many here, including you as friends! Yes, FRIENDS!
There! I dropped the F bomb twice! Let's see how many are offended by that!

Archie,

I have dropped the "f" word often when I speak about you. I too consider you a close friend, as does the rest of my family.
So, let me wish you a life full of "merries" and "happies..." I don't think those are real words, but I trust you understand my meaning.

Here is the issue I have with those who are offended. If they are opposed to the joy and they see a thread called "Merry Christmas" why do they read and respond to such a thread. They are subjecting themselves to any offense that may be in the thread. They can save themselves all that anger by just making their own thread and call it Ba Humbug. And because I would not even given the thread a second glance, then there would be no need for them to reference others sycophantic.
Problem solved!

Exactly! And, thank you!
We all run across stuff that we don't like from time to time in the virtual world, and the click to leave is the same click it took to get there. If you don't like it, don't read/look at it. Simple, really.

Tell that kiddo of yours howdy from Uncle Archie, and, Happy New Year my friend!

I say if they are offended move on. It's odd how only Jesus Christ offends. If just religion offended them why don't they march in front of a mosque? No one ever seems to be offended by islam. Budda don't seem to bother anyone. Makes u think Jesus might be the only real deal out there!!!!
