Mel Tillis, Country Legend, Dies in Florida at 85
Throughout his six-decade career, country music legend Lonnie Melvin Tillis — more famously known as Mel Tillis — recorded more than 60 albums, wrote more than 1,000 songs, and had more than three-dozen Top 10 singles.
“Mel Tillis was a guy who had it all: He could write, he could sing and he could entertain an audience,” Grand Ole Opry announcer and WSM DJ Eddie Stubbs told the Tennessean. “There’s a big difference between a concert and a show. Mel Tillis always put on a show.”
He added that when you were around him, “you always felt good.”
Tillis, who was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and, according to Fox News, in 2007 his daughter Pam, who is also a musician, had the honor of inducting him into the Grand Ole Opry.
In 2012, he was also awarded the National Medal of Arts by then-President Barack Obama.
Unfortunately, on Sunday, a post on Pam's official Facebook page announced that her father passed away on Saturday night.
“It was sudden and unexpected,” the post said. “Pam's father was dearly loved and one of a kind.”
Tillis's spokesman, Don Murry Grubbs, told Billboard that the 85-year-old died at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida, and has battled intestinal issues since 2016.
Billboard reported the suspected cause of death is respiratory failure.
According to Rolling Stone, Tillis is survived by his six children, six grandchildren, a great-grandson, and his longtime partner, Kathy DeMonaco.
