Conservatives and some of the Stupid Things They Say

April 22, 2013 By Allen Clifton

I know this has probably been done hundreds of times, but I felt like putting my spin on it anyway. After a day in which I went through hundreds of comments from conservatives on my various articles and Facebook page, I felt motivated to write this article to vent a little bit about the ignorance I commonly run across.

And I’m pretty sure most who read this will have seen this same type of stupidity.

Here we go…

“The government never does anything for me.”— Said by the person who drove on public roads from their job, which provides overtime pay and safe working conditions for its employees, to pick up their child/children from public school. A trip that was made safe due to a system of well organized traffic signals.

“Keep the government out of my health care.”— Said by the person on Medicare.

“FEMA is unconstitutional.”— Said by the person prior to their town, and home, being destroyed by a natural disaster.

“I’m for a fiscally responsible government.”— Said by the person who v**ed for both Reagan and Bush twice.

“I’m for small government.”— Said by the person who supports a Constitutional Amendment defining marriage and laws which infringe on a woman’s right to choose.

“The Second Amendment keeps the government fearful of its citizens.”— Said by the person who supports spending hundreds of billions more on our defense, which is controlled by the government.

“I’m pro-life.”— Said by the person who brags about how often the death penalty is used in their state.

“I believe in a traditional Constitutional government.”— Said by the person who believes citizens need guns to o*******w government and talks of secession anytime the Constitution supports something they disagree with.

“I don’t trust the mainstream media.”— Said by the person who brags about Fox News being American’s top cable news channel.

“We need to make English the official language.”— Said by the person who can’t speak proper English.

“We need to get back to traditional American values and freedom.”— Said by the person who cites a time in American history when interracial marriage was illegal, segregation was practiced and women were often (and still are) denied equal rights under the law.

“The government doesn’t create jobs.”— Said by the person who slams the President for poor job creation.

“Muslims are all terrorists.”— Said by the person that thinks all Muslims are from the Middle East and doesn’t realize the largest population of Muslims actually lives in Southeast Asia.

“Liberals h**e freedom.”— Said by the person attacking liberals for protecting equal rights for gays, women, minorities and religions other than Christianity.

“Social Security is Socialism.”— Said by the person whose grandparents live off Social Security.

“The recession was caused by Obama.”— Said by the person who believes January 20, 2009 somehow came before all of 2008.

“I support the military and our troops.”— Said by the person who v**ed for the President who started 2 wars, resulting in thousands of military deaths, thousands more suffering from permanent disabilities and supports the party which cuts VA funding.

“Tax cuts create jobs.”— Said the person who can’t explain why with higher taxes we had historic economic growth in the 90’s, and with lower taxes had a historic economic collapse.

“We must stop welfare abuse.”— Said the person who has no problem with rich individuals and giant corporations abusing our tax system to pay lower effective tax rates than most middle class Americans.

“I’m taxed enough already.”— Said by the person who pays no income tax and gets huge deductions because of their children.

“The United States has the highest corporation tax rate in the world.”— Said by the person that isn’t aware that tax rates and effective tax rates are completely different, which the effective tax rate most American corporations pay is one of the lowest in the world.

“Rape should be seen as a blessing from God”— Said by the person who carries a gun and pepper spray to avoid being raped.

“Homosexuality is a choice.”— Said by the person who can’t recall when they chose to be straight.

“Same-sex marriage ruins the sanctity of marriage.” — Said by the person who’s been divorced twice and c***ted on both spouses.

“The minimum wage k**ls job creation.”— Said by the person who complains about too many people relying on welfare, many of which do so because they only make minimum wage.

“The government stifles our rights as Americans.”— Said by the person that’s upset because the government prevented them from denying someone else their rights as an American.

“Our nation was founded on the Christian religion as one nation under God.”— Said by the person who can’t find the word “Christianity” anywhere in our Constitution and doesn’t realize that the phrase “Under God” wasn’t added until the 1950’s.

I’ll stop there, but I could have easily kept going. Honestly I didn’t realize I had this many until I scrolled back up my draft of this article.

Those are some truly ridiculously stupid things li... (show quote)

Yes, both Liberals and Conservatives have been known to state some obviously stupid things. But so much of what you brought out as stupid Conservative sayings weren't stupid, but against your liberal philosophy and not really stupid. Some examples:

“The government never does anything for me.”— Said by the person who drove on public roads from their job, which provides overtime pay and safe working conditions for its employees, to pick up their child/children from public school. A trip that was made safe due to a system of well organized traffic signals. >>> What about picking up their child from a private school that they paid for separately, so their child could get a better education, while still paying for the public schools.

“I’m for a fiscally responsible government.”— Said by the person who v**ed for both Reagan and Bush twice. >>> Just thinking how much worse the last president was on fiscal issues.

“I’m for small government.”— Said by the person who supports a Constitutional Amendment defining marriage and laws which infringe on a woman’s right to choose. >>> Because they want to support a human who has no choice in the first nine months of their life.

“The Second Amendment keeps the government fearful of its citizens.”— Said by the person who supports spending hundreds of billions more on our defense, which is controlled by the government. >>> One of the few legitimate things the Federal Government is charged to do. Protect America.

“I believe in a traditional Constitutional government.”— Said by the person who believes citizens need guns to o*******w government and talks of secession anytime the Constitution supports something they disagree with. >>> A legitimate concern and one of the ideas behind gun ownership, to protect ourselves from an out of control government like we were starting to get in the last eight years.

“I don’t trust the mainstream media.”— Said by the person who brags about Fox News being American’s top cable news channel. >>> Sounds good so far. It is.

“We need to make English the official language.”— Said by the person who can’t speak proper English. >>> Agreed to that person. But we do need to make English the official language of America.

“We need to get back to traditional American values and freedom.”— Said by the person who cites a time in American history when interracial marriage was illegal, segregation was practiced and women were often (and still are) denied equal rights under the law. >>> Like family values and not one person families becoming the norm, religious rights that have been eroded of late, marriage between a man and a woman, control of immigration and not immigration for diversity, but America's needs.

“The government doesn’t create jobs.”— Said by the person who slams the President for poor job creation. >>> On that individual. Good point. But it is still true, the government doesn't create jobs, but does create obstruction to the private sector creating jobs.

“Muslims are all terrorists.”— Said by the person that thinks all Muslims are from the Middle East and doesn’t realize the largest population of Muslims actually lives in Southeast Asia. >>>Have you seen the terrorism of Southeast Asia. The Muslims are continually attacking civilians and government positions in the Philippines and Thailand and where they are in control in Indonesia and Malaysia they restrict the rights of other religions.

“Liberals h**e freedom.”— Said by the person attacking liberals for protecting equal rights for gays, women, minorities and religions other than Christianity. >>> like the freedom to practice their religion and religious beliefs, the freedom to pick our own needs for health care, the freedom to educate our children where we want without having to still pay for someone else's kids.

“The recession was caused by Obama.”— Said by the person who believes January 20, 2009 somehow came before all of 2008.>>> The recovery was d**gged on forever because of the last president making it the longest and weakest recovery from a recession in history

“We must stop welfare abuse.”— Said the person who has no problem with rich individuals and giant corporations abusing our tax system to pay lower effective tax rates than most middle class Americans. >>> Two separate topics. Welfare abuse exists and it is out of control.

“The United States has the highest corporation tax rate in the world.”— Said by the person that isn’t aware that tax rates and effective tax rates are completely different, which the effective tax rate most American corporations pay is one of the lowest in the world. >>> Then why do they go elsewhere with there headquarters and shield so much money overseas were the rates are lower?

“Same-sex marriage ruins the sanctity of marriage.” — Said by the person who’s been divorced twice and c***ted on both spouses. >>>I suppose that is a reference to President Trump. At least his affairs didn't end up with children like both of the Clintons.

“The minimum wage k**ls job creation.”— Said by the person who complains about too many people relying on welfare, many of which do so because they only make minimum wage. >>> They can always try to improve themselves with schooling or work two jobs, ditch the cell phone, etc.

“The government stifles our rights as Americans.”— Said by the person that’s upset because the government prevented them from denying someone else their rights as an American. >>> It has and does.

“Our nation was founded on the Christian religion as one nation under God.”— Said by the person who can’t find the word “Christianity” anywhere in our Constitution and doesn’t realize that the phrase “Under God” wasn’t added until the 1950’s. >>> But it was founded by Christians who considered their religious beliefs as they wrote the Constitution.

As one should recognize, neither liberals nor conservatives (politicians or not) have a patent on idiocy. >>> I agree. But there is a difference between policy disagreements and what constitutes stupidity in your mind as a liberal, and just stupid comments that both liberal and conservative can both agree on. I didn't comment on all, but just those I disagree with more on policy and unfair characterizations.

Yes, both Liberals and Conservatives have been kno... (show quote)

You actually make some good points here, E, while seemingly missing my point: If one wants to nit-pick and cherry-pick on stupid comments from either ideological camp, they are quickly and easily found. For that reason, I shall present a smaller, more specific list of really dumb comments by conservatives...from a conservative spokesman. That would be Bernie Goldberg, who appeared regularly on the O'Reilly Factor.

The following is a short column by him highlighting some truly lame comments by conservatives in the recent past:

Really Dumb Conservatives …

By Bernard Goldberg October 29, 2012

As you regular readers know, I’m not a fan of our president and am hoping Mitt Romney wins the e******n in a few days. But …

More than a few times – actually a lot more than a few times – I am embarrassed by how dumb some of the anti-Obama conservatives can be. They give liberals ammo to say we’re all that way.

Remember that i***tic comment by Republican Todd Akin who is running for the U.S. Senate from Missouri – the comment about “legitimate rape.” Thanks to that doofus the Democrats will almost certainly hang on to their seat in Missouri, possibly depriving Republicans of a majority in the Senate.

Then came another religious right genius – Republian Richard Murdock who’s running for the Senate from Indiana. The other day he said, “I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen,” explaining why he opposed a******ns for rape victims.

I know what he means about human life being sacred and and the fetus being innocent and all that. But, sorry, the comment comes off as really, really dopey. It didn’t help that he’s the only Senate candidate Romney made a commercial for.

Then there are the amateurs, run-of-the mill Neanderthals, like the person who tried to post the following comment on this Web site — but it was intercepted by the automated system which apparently thought it was too dumb for anyone with half a brain to see. This is the kind of stuff we protect you from:

“If you believe and trust in the Liberals not to c***t with our v**es. A lot of polling places have already been found to alter the machines to take v**es from republican straight party se******n and give them to the democ~rats. This fraud has to stop. The c***ters must be found and sent to prison. I do not trust Obama or any of the liberal marxist thinking in our society and neither should anyone else. They will deceive and lie to get what they want. The Arab in office now has to go, he is not honest and neither are his followers! “

“The Arab in office now has to go”? Really?

Here’s what bothers me even more than what these half-wits say and think: All the “true-blue conservatives” who just read their moronic observations and agree with every single word.

Not you, of course.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Oh, BTW, E...although you think differently...I consider myself a moderate/centrist. But, there are plenty of "liberals" on OPP who have let me know that they consider me too staunch a conservative. Go figure. However, those of us in the middle are used to being labeled both liberal and conservative. The worst thing about ideological zealots is that they have neither a healthy sense of humor nor healthy balance in thought.

Fair enough, E, and take care. With your fair and reasonable comments lacking (at least, to my memory) vitriolic ad hominem attacks, you are a welcomed and worthwhile contributor to discussions. That holds in good stead even as we may frequently differ in our outlook on matters. Cheers to you, also.

I did get into some nasty posts earlier with some posters who I consider to be totally outrageous. Trying to avoid that, but sometimes I can't help myself when confronted with the real stupid. But ultimately I would rather talk over issues reasonably with some give and take. I try to use logic as much s possible with what facts I believe I know and we'll see where it goes. Cheers.

As stated, in my limited memory of exchanges with you, I have found you reasonable. I'm not too familiar with your dealings with others, but I certainly recognize and understand "totally outrageous" as prevalent from both sides of the ideological/partisan spectrum. Whether or not there is an equal split would be a matter of opinion. But, there are many good people on OPP, regardless of their variances in viewpoints.

Well, Bahmer, you are a perfect example of someone with whom I can disagree and still greatly respect. My recollections after a few years of your postings assure me you are a most reasonable gentleman....your only flaw being that of siding with AuntiE far too often for my comfort.

Well for one that enjoys eating as much as you do, should have by now known to take care of the one that feeds you, and you should know on which side your bread is buttered on. But alas you seem to want to antagonize the one who is such an excellent cook, and caterer, and have her attack you with her wide assortment of frying pans, from the little sk**let on up to the giant one. You must truly have a persecution complex my good man. Just think of the arm muscles that dear woman has developed over the years just keeping you in check. She probably by now can get the better of a good number of you Marines and can probably keep you in your place whenever you show up.

I enjoy toying with her. I have faced her eeevilness by looking directly into her eyes and surviving. However, she is a worthy antagonist.

As one should recognize, neither liberals nor conservatives (politicians or not) have a patent on idiocy.
Those are some truly ridiculously stupid things li... (show quote)

I believe that request was for statements made by elected Republican officials in government, not by various people on Facebook whom you have no way of knowing are actually even v****g Republicans. Beyond that, what you cited isn't near as asinine as those of top Democratic party officials, and in many cases even correct, such as that this country was founded as a Christian nation and on the Christian religion. Just because it isn't stated in the Constitution doesn't mean that it wasn't founded on Christian principles. (and you should have the sense to know that) It wasn't put in there because our government wasn't intended to be a theocracy and it did intend to maintain a freedom of religion.

“Same-sex marriage ruins the sanctity of marriage.” — Said by the person who’s been divorced twice and c***ted on both spouses. ----- We are all flawed human beings and because the guy is a sinner, unable or even unwilling to attain a standard of perfection does not mean government should degrade the sanctity of marriage by using it to bring up the a******lity/perversion of homosexuality to the state of normalcy and wholesomeness of heterosexual marriage (whose purpose is to bring up the next generation with their head screwed on straight) by using it to sanctify Butt FU**ING. Now, do you have enough common sense and decency to realize that, or not? . Nobody is telling anybody what to do, but don't degrade the Sanctified Purpose of marriage that way.

Did you know that the founding fathers never intended for there to be a personal income tax on your earnings. (I believe that is written down somewhere, although I can't tell you where -- it was my knowledgeable brother who was the Montana Freeman type, and they know their stuff on historical government and law far more than the lawyers, lawmakers and politicians) Income tax is blatantly illegal. It was passed on a holidaywith most of the politicians absent, and never ratified. That's why they cannot prosecute you for not paying income tax, but only for lying when you tried to avoid income tax through deceit. You are prosecuted because you sign your form stating your numerical assertions are true and correct.

“I’m for small government.”— Said by the person who supports a Constitutional Amendment defining marriage and laws which infringe on a woman’s right to choose. This one is really patently ridiculous. You are talking about a far larger issue here. Your problem is that you don't value human life. The bigger issue is that you are snuffing out a human life that is already in progress, never giving it a chance to live outside the womb at all. And I think that's a little more important than a woman's right to Fu*k her brains out with whomever she chooses without taking proper precautions just figuring if something happens she'll deal with it later.

I could go on but I very wasted enough time on you. As I have demonstrated with these example, there is something not being taken into consideration that overpowers the point of your putting them there, proving these examples are for the simpleminded. And most importantly again. as I mentioned[u], the examples requested were supposed to be statements from Elected Republican officials & YOU AIN'T GOT NONE !

You may go to far and get your foot caught in a bear trap if you know what I mean.
