Lost in t***slation

http://atheistcartoons.tumblr.com/post/163656902064/when-jerome-t***slated-the-bible-into-common-latin

When Jerome t***slated the bible into common Latin in 382 AD, he confused the Hebrew words for shining and horned, so when Moses came down from the mountain, he was described as horned in the only bible most people had .
Much of Christian art from 400 AD to the Reformation (when questioning t***slations became less fatal) depicts Moses in the fashion of Michelangelos famous sculpture on the left above.
The Hebrew word for shining is karan and the Hebrew word for horned is keren. In a language which had no indications for vowels, a mistake like this is understandable. It is an act of extraordinary scholarship that Jerome managed to take long strings of consonants and turn it into anything readable.
So the questions for our Christian friends are:
Do you believe that Moses had horns?
If you lived before they discovered this t***slation error, would you have believed that Moses had horns?
Honest answers will hopefully send them down the path of enlightenment.

Hi Sing!

No...I don't think Moses had horns.

I'm sure a lot of people would have done what they still do...believe wh**ever they're told because it's easier than studying for themselves.

The Vulgate has more than one t***slational problem, but so does every English bible. For instance, the passage in Revelation that describes the 4 horsemen. It mentions the "pale" horse and rider. The Greek word was "chloros" which means green. I'm sure some t***slator thought to himself, "Green?! What kind of sense does that make?" So he t***slated it the way he thought it should have been.

Well Singy,

You kind of had to be there to know the t***h.

But no, I don't believe the horn theory.

My question to you is, why are you badgering the poor Christian folks today ?

Don't you know that they don't actually read their Bible's ?

Even atheists read more scriptures than the average Christian.

I guess, if one feels compelled to respond by explaining the question using smaller words, pronouncing them slowly and carefully, one should not be disappointed by a simplistic answer.

Good day, sir. I just feel frisky sometimes, I guess.

Yes, reading bibles and examining scriptures for sense and logic is the only way to become an atheist!

And Admin promises a new era of scholarly debate and polite decorum to support such discussions.

Hi, big guy! So if some of your scriptures are shown to be confusingly t***slated or contradictory how can you trust the veracity of the rest?

1) I'm very bright...I know how to research and..,

2) I believe God will guide me in my learning. That's the biggie.

You know t***slating anything from one language to another is tricky business. There's no such thing as word for word. The Masai people have a word describing westerners which t***slated means "people whose clothing retains their farts."

Idea for idea t***slation is what they seem to try for...which means a student needs to dig more deeply than the black characters on the white page.

Another thing I've learned about Scripture is, just because I don't understand something now does not mean I won't understand it in a year or ten and what I do understand I'll understand better as time passes.

What about dumbasses who aren't as bright as you?

There are over 4,000 various Christian denominations who disagree vehemently enough over the meaning and intent of various scriptures that they cannot bring themselves to worship and study together in the same group. Over 4000 instances in which supposedly sincere and honest persons of apparent good will exhibit honest differences in the interpretation and practice of Christianity.

How can one know whether or which denomination has the t***h which will set them free?

How does one avoid vainly worshipping and teaching as sound Christian doctrines the commandments of mere men as if they were t***h?

What is the eternal fate of the Christian who honestly just gets it wrong?

They make up for it by being willing to learn. God guides them, too.

That happens to every organization in which humans are involved.

1) Whether? No denomination as any ability to set anyone free. Personally, I consider them sandboxes to be played in if one agrees to play the same way as everyone else in the sandbox.

2) Every denomination has t***h enough at hand (the scriptures) for any true seeker to find it.

How does a cashier learn what counterfeit money looks like? By knowing what the real thing looks like, of course. In this case, scripture. There's no way anyone could memorize all the jillions of variations in counterfeit dough!

I'm not sure what you mean by getting it wrong, but the word "honestly" gives me enough to work with. They go to heaven. God knows we get all sorts of things wrong all the time. We live in the Age of Grace, not that it hasn't always been about grace. The Law and all its harsh requirements was given because since the Fall...the breaking of the one and only rule, we have labored under the misapprehension that by our good deeds we can work our way to heaven. Works aren't the point. The condition of the inner person is the point. Good deeds are a by-product.
