Mark chapter 10

Verse 1

Listening to Jesus improves the life of the common man but those who are in the hierarchy of the religious community oppose Him. If you follow Jesus, they will oppose you to.

Verse 2 - 9
.
When men and women form a union, satan uses emotional appeals to break the relationship up. Men and women are different. Women are more emotional. Men are more cerebral. Relationships are tricky. A man can do everything right, and the woman wants to cheat because she can. A wife can submit to her husband, he can desire another woman because his wife is getting old. We shouldn’t divorce. You should value your new family over your old. Your kids need you more than your parents. Children have a nasty habit of growing up. This lesson is different from Matthew 19:3 - 9. Where a Pharisee asks Jesus a question and tries to snare Him with a follow-up question. This issue isn’t brought up in Luke at all.

Verse 10 - 12

Sin has consequences. There is no need for us to look down on sinners. They destroy their own lives. We are all sinners. There is no need to finger point. In fact finger pointing is a bigger sin than whatever we think someone else has done.

Verse 13 - 16

The best environment in which to raise kids is with Christian parents. Jesus never refused anybody that came to Him. Children are gullible and believe anything you tell them. The first step on your Christian journey is faith. You understand later.

Verse 17 - 22

Similar incidents are found in Matthew 19:16 - 22 and Luke 18:18 - 25. But there are some differences. In Matthew and Mark, Jesus is approached by random people, but Matthew makes no mention of running and kneeling. In Luke it is a certain ruler. In all cases keeping the commandments is stressed. But the commandment not to covet is replaced in Matthew and Mark and omitted in Luke. In all cases, Jesus comes to the same conclusion.

Verse 23

Friendship with the world is enmity with God. Your heart follows your treasure. Read Matthew 6:19 - 21 How do you lay up treasure in heaven? The only scriptures I found are in Matthew 5:11 & 12. It seems being used, abused, beated, and mistreated and not retaliating will store up treasure.

Verse 24 - 27

Riches and sin are deceitful. They feel good to the flesh but have negative consequences. You cannot use this life as a barometer to see if you are pleasing God. Bubblegum Christianity is a lie. We should not expect instant results. At this time the city of Jerusalem was surrounded by walls. The walls contained two gates. A large gate for daytime traffic. And a smaller gate for nighttime traffic, called the needle gate. A loaded camel had to drop it’s burdens and get down on it’s knees to fit through the needle gate. It was a tedious process.

Verse 28 - 31

The last person that should teach is someone who has no experience. The person qualified to teach is one who understands. In every other field of study, you don’t coach unless you’ve played. But you can teach bible after going to seminary for three months. Life cannot be taught, it must be experienced.

Verse 32 - 34

Jesus again predicts His upcoming persecution, execution, and resurrection.

Verse 35 - 40

This is only here. Christ now sits on the right hand of God. That means God is on Christ’s left. In Matthew 20:20 - 23, James and John’s mother make the request.

Verse 41 - 45

Religion ignores the teachings of Christ. Read the sixth chapter of Matthew. Fasting, giving, and praying should not be public. The greatest should serve. If pastors cared for their congregation, they would learn before they teach.

Verse 46 - 52

Similar miracles occur in Matthew 20:30 - 34 and Luke 18:35 - 43, but there minor differences. In Matthew there are two blind men and in Luke the blind man is unnamed. In all cases blind men call Jesus the son of David. People first tell the blind to be quiet, but change their minds when Jesus calls for him. This is the last healing Jesus does. We can liken giving sight to the blind to giving knowledge to the unlearned.
