Mark chapter 9

Verse 1

Peter, James, and John were part of the inner circle. They were with Jesus on the mount of transfiguration. They were selected to accompany Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane when He prayed before His arrest. In less than a week Christ would be transfigured. One day the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of our Lord. All won’t go to heaven because heaven is coming here.

Verse 2 - 4

Moses represents the law. Elijah represents the prophets. Religion teaches that grace frees us from the law, but not the tithe. This doesn’t make sense. The prophets are completely ignored.

Verse 5 - 9

There are some that still doubt that Jesus is the son of God. They must not believe God. Six times in three gospels God calls Jesus His son. In John 12:28 Jesus calls God Father and God answered Him audibly.

Verse 10

Many times Jesus told His disciples of His upcoming persecution, execution, and resurrection. They didn’t understand until it happened.

Verse 11 - 13

John the Baptist came in the spirit of Elijah. Malachi 4:5 says God will send Elijah before Jesus. John the Baptist tried to make everyone realize to repent because their actions went against God’s word.

Verse 14 - 29

The same events occur in Matthew and Luke. The details are different, but basically the same thing happens in all three gospels. A boy is possessed by an evil spirit. The disciples try to cast it out but can’t. After Jesus rebukes His disciples, He cast the demon out of the boy. Later, the disciples ask why they couldn’t cast that one out. (They cast out others). Jesus says this kind require prayer and fasting.

Verse 30 - 32

Once again Jesus predicts His upcoming persecution, execution, and resurrection. His disciples don’t understand.

Verse 33 - 37

The greatest should be a servant. We have it backwards. Going to church should benefit us. Children don’t learn to teach, they learn to pass a test. Read Matthew 18:3.

Verse 38 - 40

United we stand, divided we fall. If we don’t stand together, we will fall apart.

Verse 41 - 50

Jesus is not talking about self mutilation. He is referring to the many membered body. If someone teaches anything that doesn’t agree with scripture, it would be better to fire the bad teacher, than have the whole church lost.
