Mark chapter 7

Verse 1 & 2

The scribes and Pharisees didn’t come to learn, they came to find fault.

Verse 3 - 5

There is a scene in the movie “Trading Places”, where Eddie Murphy is playing an exchange student. He says, “beef jerky time”, and then eats beef jerky. Eating for the Sanhedrin was like beef jerky time on steroids. They washed their hands up to their elbows like a surgeon. They washed plates, cups, and tables. They expected Jesus and the disciples to do what they did because their fathers did it.

Verse 6 & 7

The scripture is found in Isaiah 29:13. However Jesus adds four words, “In vain they worship”. Worship without obedience is a waste of time. It doesn’t matter if you sing in the choir, you still can’t cheat on your spouse.

Verse 8 - 13

The Sanhedrin had a rule called corban. In it instead of providing for your parents when they got old, you could make a small donation to the church, and keep the rest of the money you would have spent on them.

Verse 14 - 23

This includes cigars, cigarettes, alcohol, and pork. What is Jesus talking about? I like smothered pork chops. Leviticus 11:7 forbids the eating of pork. For critics I would emphasize verse 15. The truth is it doesn’t matter and nobody cares. But if I say the wrong thing to your mother, wife, or daughter, we will have a problem. It is not what goes in the mouth, but what comes out.

Verse 24 - 30

In Matthew 15:21 - 28 the woman is Canaanite and both miracles are in Tyre and Sidon. This miracle is not in Luke at all. In Matthew and Mark both miracles are similar. Tyre and Sidon is a 50 mile walk from Galilee.

Verse 31 - 37

This miracle is only in Mark. Jesus and the disciples improved the lives of everyone.
