After his less publicized march from Vicksburg across the South, he boasted to Abraham Lincoln , the city of Meridian no longer existed. Lincoln congratulated him.

The damage inflicted on the South was and remains the main reason why the South still lags behind the rest of the country economically. B****s & w****s all have suffered. Sherman’s executed and raped non-combatant victims included b****s & w****s, an equal opportunity butcher. We prosecuted Germans and Japanese as war criminals after WWII for similar tactics.

Gen. Philip Sheridan did much the same in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Both Sheridan and Sherman resumed their terrorism in the Indian Wars.

Those who advocate for the removal of Confederate memorials should remember these things. And no Confederate, not even the much maligned Nathan Bedford Forrest, remotely approached Sheridan and Sherman in the horrors inflicted. Maybe we should be tearing down Union commemoratives as well.
