Isaiah chapter 23

Verse 1 - 12

The Phoenicians were traders who were excellent shipbuilders who traded in various cities along the Mediterranean Sea. They invented a new way of communication based on letters instead of pictures like Egyptian hieroglyphics. We get the concept of phonetic alphabet from the Phoenicians. But they worshipped idols and had no knowledge of God. So due to their closeness to Israel, they enjoyed the benefits of living Godly without being Godly. The main cities of the Phoenicians were Tyre and Sidon. They traded with Egypt, Greece, North Africa, Spain, and as far North as lands that would eventually become England and Ireland. The Phoenicians were wealthy but worshipped idols made by man. This doesn’t make any sense. If I made you, then you should worship me. I can make pancakes. When I make pancakes I eat them until I’m full. The Phoenicians were also proud of the trade that made them wealthy. Because they were wealthy, they didn’t care about anything but themselves. This chapter is for those that trust in wealth and put no value in honor, character, faithfulness, and caring for children. Man makes money, but money does not make man.

Verse 13 - 16

As He is our creator, God has every right to tell us how to live the life He gave us. An old harlot misses the days of her youth, when she was beautiful. Today the Phoenicians are no longer a people. They don’t exist. The last generation of Phoenicians could only reflect on days gone by. Read the 18th chapter of Revelation.

Verse 17 & 18

In 70 years, the Medes and Persians would conquer Babylon. I don’t think verse 18 has happened yet.
