Lesson 18: Why People Reject Christ (John 3:19-21)

July 7, 2013

Picture a guy floating downstream on a raft on a hot summer day. He’s having the time of his life, enjoying the ride as the cool water gently splashes on him. You’re on the shore and you know that there’s a deadly waterfall not far downstream. This guy is floating blissfully and ignorantly toward certain destruction! So you yell to warn him. You throw him a rope. But he rejects it and keeps floating toward certain death. Why won’t he grab the life preserver? Because he loves what he’s doing and he doesn’t want to believe your warning.

Why do people reject God’s wonderful offer of salvation through Jesus Christ? You would think that everyone would eagerly grab the life preserver that God has thrown out through the gospel (John 3:16): “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Why would anyone reject such a wonderful offer? Why would anyone want to keep heading for eternal destruction? In our text, John shows us:

People reject Christ because they love their sin and they h**e having it exposed by God’s light.

Why would I reject Christ? I wouldn't. What Christ represents is decency, compassion, and solace. Of course, living a life according to his model is a guarantee of failure... and yes, he demonstrated that truism also, on the cross. Still, he is someone to emulate to the degree that is possible.

On the other hand, I utterly reject the basic concepts of all religions and I cannot imagine venerating the kind of sadistic bastards all gods seem to manage to become sooner or later and Jehovah seems to have been from the beginning. No thank you, a return to nonexistence, eternal death is far preferable.

As an agnostic I accept the possibility of a god or possibly no god at all. Agnostic is just another word for I don't know. One thing I do know, a being with the supposed power to create a universe, who couldn't come up with a better system than what this world offers isn't all that smart and most certainly is an absentee landlord.

Why would I reject Christ? I wouldn't. What Christ... (show quote)

So, in other words, you think that you know better than God. Such hubris. Face it. The reason you reject Christ is because He has exposed you for what you are. A sinner. You love your sin, so you reject Him. Simple as that.

As another Agnostic I simply accept that there are certain things about this life that we are not
supposed to know like the eternal unfinished mystery of life and death. Ironic though how the eager evangelistic f*****ts mirror the Atheists in their delusional belief that they adsolutely positively KNOW.....

Unfortunately for you, Salvation isn't multiple-choice. You don't get to choose non-existence, and eternal death is not the lack of sensations, it's the lack of God. It's the lack of all that is good. It is the embodiment of evil. It's worse than any nightmare possible.

Let's say you're right. If God created everything then He created that just for those who doubt Him. Look up the definitions of sadist and vindictive.

You need to pay better attention. I not only don't claim to know better than God, I don't even know if there is a god. I even said I would not reject Christ. I reject the idea of a god who demands we undergo His initiation rites in order to join his club. I reject a mindset, like yours, that is so tethered to itself that it must fit the universe into itself, speaking of hubris... claiming to know others' minds better than they do.

Using your terminology, I am fully aware of my sins and am deeply regretful of my certain shortcomings from perfection. I do the best I can.

You don't define God.

You might consider that since God created the entire universe, matter, space, and time, all from scratch, that He is smarter than you.

God does not conform to your wishes. If He did, then you would be God, and He would not be.

Super, you are the intellectual equivalent of your namesake. If God exists, He is certainly far greater than I. That doesn't make Him immune to my assessment.

But it does make your assessment irrelevant.

Actually it's not irrelevant.

Your assessment may seal your fate for eternity.

To you and Him, maybe, but not to me.
