I attend funerals to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased. I am polite to those with quaint customs in any situation. At funerals one should be extra considerate of others and their customs.
My mother died in December.
My brother sang bass iinstead of Daddy as he died over 10 years ago. My sister sang soprano and I sang alto.
We did our usual stunning a cappella renditions of:
The Unclouded Day, To Caanans Land I'm on My Way, and Where the Soul Never Dies. No instrumental accompaniments, as per church of Christ custom. ( If I can sing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer or Puff the Magic D**gon who lived in a land called Ha Na Li (sp?) then I can sing about souls, and Heaven and eternal life with the same aplomb. And it pleased and comforted my mother to have our promise to sing at her funeral. I find it important to keep promises.
My other Southern Baptist Preacher brother recused himself from his promise and refused to allow himself or his wife to sing in a "denominational service." Afeared of demon encroachment. I kid you not, she explained it to me in detail.
I did not feel out of place. It seems my other brother and his wife did.
And I was all dressed up.
And I changed my avatar photo to show my Mom and all her children together for a meal just weeks before she died.
I'm in the blue t-shirt. My other brother is in the blue plaid. Doesn't feel comfortable with bodily contact with me. Demons again? He didn't say.
