retired669-the debt is out of control and all the conservatives want to do is rein it in. You cannot keep the social programs going if you allow the debt to consume too large a percentage of GNP. The democrats merely want to extend the debt without thought to cutting anything to pay for the added costs of borrowing. All the pet programs are much too sacred to even think about cutting anything. So you can expect that the republicans are going, once again, try to get some spending concessions in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. If the debt were half of what it is now, think of the billions in interest that we would save to use on programs to help people. You cannot continue to spend money you do not have and the day of reckoning is approaching faster than we would like to think. Sooner or later, foreign countries who hold our debt will start calling it in so what do we give them, national parks, oil rich land, etc.
We cannot afford to wait until the Axe falls to wake up to the fact that borrowing has its limits and printing presses only devalue existing currency. I do not know of anyone who could run a household ad infinitum on borrowed money and not be forced into total bankruptcy at some point in time. The government does not live within its means because we allow it and its the way it has always been. The government has way too many high salaried individuals doing nothing but shuffling papers and dreaming up ways of spending tax dollars. I would surmise that each department of government could be cut by 20% and still function as effectively, if not better, than it does now. The only area in the country that is awash with cash in the Washington, D.C. area and its suburbs. If you prefer that your children pay for this largesse so be it. I am of the opinion that we can get by just fine by spending a lot less. Good Luck America !!!
