You were lucky. 99% of dogs will not do that without training.

All my dogs have been dumps and while raising my kids . They knew when I was gone they would protect the kids I never had any trained was just blessed the dogs I have now would probably let an intruder in and show them where the valubles were as long as they got petted and they both came from the pound.Thats why I'm getting a gun love them they let me know when someones around but thats all.

On the other hand, if a child is in trouble, Dogs will go to their aid. I remember a story about a German shepherd that jumped into freezing water to save a small child.
