My cat acts similarly; I have usually been gone for a week or so, a couple of times a year. I have a friend from church take care of food, water and litter when I am away, and she never even sees him--he is half chicken, I swear. Whenever I return home, I will let him know it's me by my voice and he will come out from his hidden-hole meowing and yowling a bit, just to let me know how disappointed he is in my leaving him. Then he'll come up on the couch, purring and meowing and expecting full petting and stroking for recompense of my absence. He generally sleeps close to me and keeps his eye on me, and if I get up he will often follow me from one room to another, expecting some form of affection or play (he likes the game of chase). Just like any cat, he will go to a quiet place on occasion, but always greets me whenever I arrive home, even if I have only been gone an hour. So, although dogs are typically effusive in greeting a returning master, it is not unusual in cats, too; they just express their affection differently.
