I have right but not the ability to remain silent. Everything I say will be used against me. After 30 plus years I admit to being a repeat offender.

It's years later, and here it comes - straight out of the blue... BLAM!! AMBUSH!!! "You said (insert wild imaginary thing here)"! Been there. Done that. Bought the tee-shirt. Paid the price, many times over. She says you said/did it, and she is judge, jury and executioner. That makes you 'guilty as charged', regardless of anything you might say in your own defense. And the more you say, the more she's going to hold against you. Count on it.

It makes you wonder why any first marriages survive. In your 50s and 60s you and your spouse are not the same bedroom machines you were in your 20s. Marriage is a lot more work as time goes on. Most of the " happy couples " I know are all on their second go round. I am one of the few still in the first timers club. Not that I'm bragging, because the scars are deep. Still the second timers seem to have made all the mistakes the first time and are wise er now.

I waited until I was in my mid-30's to marry. We've been torturing each other for over 20 years now. She's my first and only wife, and likely to stay that way.

Still married to the wife of my youth. Not one regret, many happy times, 5 children, 8 grandchildren. Will celebrate 50 years together In July. Most people will tell you that marriage is 50/50. It ain't true my friend, it's 100/100. You got to work hard at it every day, but it's worth it. Blessed beyond compare.

Hmmm, I feel a better adjective would be effective "use'.

My parents were not role models except in what not to do. They were married in the 1950s and I think that was the first generation where divorce among the commoners was acceptable. Both sets of grandparents were in it til death do us part which I think is why they were not afraid of death. I was fortunate in having aunts and uncles who knew how to make a marriage work so I had them as examples.

In marriage the children are priority. I've told my kids that as bad as you think you had it, you got to grow up in one house, in one town, and you went to one school district. You would not have survived my childhood. We were 6, there were more, but the weak ones didn't survive and we didn't bother to give them names.
