I've always felt the guys who served in Korea, "the forgotten war", got the rawest deal of all with regards to returning vets. I say that, even being a Viet Nam Vet.
My Dad served in both WWII & Korea, and told me the returning Vets from WWII were greeted as heroes. As a returning Korean Vet, it was as if...no big deal. I suspect Korea paled in comparison to WWII, but the reality of war
changes little, regardless. Korean Vets didn't even get their
memorial in D.C. until after we Viet Vets sponsored and built our own, as far as I understand it. That just didn't seem right...their not having one in their honor.
'Nam Vets took a lot upon their return home, and it wasn't "hero worship", except, possibly, in the eyes of their
families. Korean Vets, to my knowledge, were given sort of
a ho-hum reaction. They deserved better, and still do.
I tip my cover to all Korean Vets. You have not been forgotten by this American Vet. I particulary salute OldGringo, who stirs memories of my Dad...though a number of years younger, I might add. Welcome home, buddy, and SEMPER FIDELIS!
