I'm not talking about racism, because the KKK I'm familiar with in a small Midwestern town in the 1930s & 40s was not racist but rather a small town social club like the Masons and Lion's Club, except that its mission was enforcement of social standards--more or less "sharia law." The widow of the leader of the small midwestern town KKK chapter who was my landlady when I started teaching and who became my long time friend kept the KKK robes in her attic until she died at age 98, despite her daughter's wishes to get rid of them. She could see nothing wrong with what they had done--they were the leaders of the community and saw to it that the sinners and bad people were shamed or driven out of town or gossiped about. They acted as community judge, jury, and executioner more or less and thought they were doing good. They were not racist...as a matter of fact, when I knew the widow, whenever the subject of blacks came up in her social club, the KKK widow was known for launching into her story of the black lady and her baby she saw on a train trip to Chicago--and when she finished her narrative, anyone who was against blacks was implied to be against motherhood and babies.

You see, most KKK intended good and thought they were doing good--just as extremists, radicals, fanatics, & zealots (left & right) intend good and think they are doing good--in fact, tend to be quite self-righteous about it. KKK action went to truly awful actions in problem locations and situations despite what what they though right and good intent.
