Yes, you are right. Unions DID help build the middle class ... and now they are effectively destroying the middle class while building the number of unemployed and disenfranchised. Unions have out-lived their usefulness.

After shuffling along on this planet for better than seven decades I can say I've learned a lot; but, of all the lessons I've learned, perhaps the most valuable, is one I got in high school. My teacher gave an assignment that he
had been talking about over several weeks and recognition of his personal opinions were unavoidable. I worked diligently and handed in what I thought was a sterling report. Apparently, my teacher agreed because he gave me an 'A' for use of proper grammar and no spelling errors (in the days before SpellCheck); he gave me a 'D' because he said I did a good job of parroting his thoughts, but presented none of my own. He justified by explaining his
philosophy as a teacher. His job was to challenge his students; the student's job was to challenge their teacher. He wasn't looking for agreement. He was looking for students capable of independent thought and the courage to stand up and defend those thoughts. I won't deny that along the way I have not been popular with some teachers/instructors/professors that didn't share that
philosophy but I always felt good knowing I stood my ground. Good grades are fine but personal integrity is better.

I have to brag. My progeny and I took the test. The person I periodically call my personal bozo scored a 98. He missed two geography questions.
:D :D :D :-D

Go ahead. You've won bragging rights.

Though not the sample test I took, both of these sites have sample questions:

Several months ago I took an on-line test which was a stripped down version of the test candidates for naturalization take in order to receive citizenship. I am embarrassed to say I only got an 88; that is until I asked others to take the same test. The others included several recent college/university graduates. All were products of US public education. I didn't ask for scores but they were
bravely volunteered. One got higher; the rest didn't. This led me to deduce that the average naturalized US citizen is more knowledgeable of our government than a natural born citizen educated by our public school system. I've been kicking around this planet for better than seven decades and did take Civics courses. I feel I should gotten a better score. In my defense I didn't know the names of all nine Supreme Court justices but I did know that Joe Biden is our current Vice President -- only one of the others did --and that Washington DC is NOT located in the middle of the country. In my opinion, this same test should be
administered to every high school senior and a passing grade is necessary before a diploma is granted.
Am I alone in this?
