America is a country of immigrants. At some point in our history, all of us are from somewhere else except of course the Native Americans. That influx of people joined together and became American culture. Each culture brought with it traditions and customs. They melded together and became the greatest culture. There is inherent diversity built in. It could only have happened because the cultures blended, cooperated and worked together. Many Muslims in our country today have done this, some have not. They move into segregated areas of a city keeping their culture pure, following their own laws and basically not assimilating into American society. That is the problem. Without shared cultural values and acceptance of those who have different views problems arise. Jews in this country do not try to force the rest of us to eat kosher. They do not condem Christians for believing in Christ. They have many of their own traditions that are different from the predominantly Christian traditions of this country. Think Christmas/Hanukkah. Correct me if I am wrong but I do not recall Jews going to theaters with guns randomly killing people while exclaiming "Praise God." I think we are justified in being very cautious when considering Muslims. I truly think islamaphobia is a result of the behavior of the Islamists. The radical practice of Islam is racism, pure and simple. We have enough racism in our country now, we do not need more. Muslim immigration via the normal process with standards and requirements is fine. Blanket acceptance of refugees is quite another matter. Good luck Stone Mountain, you are going to need it.

Yes, it is an opportunity for cultural exchange, but will that exchange take place? Forced integration was tried in the south before, that didn't go so well. The people involved have to be willing to talk, share and interact. I don't have an idealistic view of this situation. Time will tell.

Borrowing a little of this from a friend, I here explain how I and Millions of other Americans feel about Donald John Trump.....We don't mind if the man swears . . . or how many times he's been married...or who he voted for, or what his income tax return shows. We want the problems fixed. Yes he's an egomaniac, but we don't mind. We know he's not a racist, or bad to women, or all the other things the liberal media is trying to label him with. We know he's raised a good family, and that says a lot about him.
Our country is a mess because politicians over the years have made it that way. The elected leaders of the Republican Party are so two faced & gutless they can't stem the onslaught against our Constitution by the elected leaders of the Democrat Party, and illegals are everywhere and Muslims are openly trying to hurt and destroy this country and make the civilized world adjust to them. We want it all fixed!
We don't mind that Mr. Trump is crude, not a polished orator, we don't mind that he has changed positions on a few things, we don't care that he fights with Megan Kelly, the bias news media, and so many of the elected establishment. We don't care that Ted Cruz, John Kasich, the Bush family, (Jeb, George W.), Lindsey Graham, and so many other top old and new Republicans refuse to endorse him for their own selfish reasons, and we know what many of them are. We don't care that he doesn't know the name of some Muslim terrorists. They certainly know his. we don't care that he tried some businesses that didn't work out, even though, a great many did, and very successfully.
This country has been militarily weakened, we're bankrupt, our enemies are making fun of us, our friends doubting us. We are being invaded by illegals, we are becoming a nation of victims, where every Tom, Ricardo and Hasid is a special group with special rights to a point where we don't even recognize the country we were born and raised in, AND WE JUST WANT IT FIXED. And Donald Trump is the only guy who seems to understand what the people want!
We're sick of politicians, sick of the Democrat and Republican Parties. We're angry about the Iran deal, the budget, out of control government spending, treatment of Israel, military weakness, lobbyists, special interests, overpaid politicians with their self-serving bills and back room deals, trade deals with foreign countries extremely unfair to us, loss of jobs, manipulated economic numbers, businesses fleeing our country, and the phony pay for play money laundering Clinton Foundation.
Americans are no longer going to be fooled, and there is a movement underway to change the direction we're taking. Mr. Trump may not be a saint, but he doesn't have lobbyist money holding him, he doesn't have political correctness restraining him, and all you know is that he has been very successful, a good negotiator, he has built a lot of things, created a lot of jobs, he's flexible, and he's also not a politician. And he says he'll fix it. And we believe him because he is too much of an egotist to be proven wrong or looked at and called a liar.
Public service has become elected greed. This may be our only, and last, chance to have a non-politician, despite his flaws, try and correct the mess, at least for 4 years. We must take the shot, because the consequences of putting Hillary Clinton in office and filling the Supreme Court with Socialist judges, and selling our beloved nation for cash are frightening. Mr. Donald Trump, a non-politician, is leading a tidal wave of the American people, non-politicians, and it’s going to overcome much of what's happened to this country and prevent further decay caused by politicians in an overbearing Federal Government.
Until next time... forward to all you can, please get involved.
John Porter
Harrison, Arkansas

P. S. A Pragmatist is: "One who sees a problem and understands it must be fixed." "Skilled in business or law." Donald Trump is a pragmatist. He doesn't see the problems as Democrat or Republican, Liberal or Conservative. He sees them only as problems and understands they must be fixed.

Clarence Thomas & Ben Carson are a discrace to their race? Why, because they are educated and successful? That suggests you would rather they be stuck on the plantation. You can't really mean that. At least I hope you don't. Is it because of their views? In either case you are showing a real lack of respect for some people who have earned it. Neither the doctor or the judge were given anything they did not work for. Their life experiences led them to where they are. They both worked hard, beat the odds and became great men in the face of adversity. If you do not respect that you are a clueless moron.

A better question is does Keapernick put a price on principle? He has the right of free speech because of this country's principles; the very country he is showing disrespect for. His actions will be judged by the public. He is an entertainer. Other very talented entertainers (Dixie Chicks) learned their lesson about the cost of free speech. No doubt it is a bold move that may very well come with consequences.
Truly the black community is divided. Some are living the dream. Dr. Carson is a classic example of that. Keapernick has a lot to be thankful for. Kind of a shame he has no positive ideas of how to call attention to his cause.

That sucks. By the time California starts to count so much of the other states counts are done. Must be frustrating to vote there. Hope the natural beauty of the state makes up for it. Then there is the tax rates. I am in Ohio, not a cheap tax state but not nearly as bad as CA

Exactly what you'd expect to hear from a Trumpbot loyalist. "Trump's newly revised immigration plan isn't really amnesty."
That's what ALL politicians say.
Here's the latest: Straight off the press. "Trump is the 9th member of the Gang of 8".

IMMIGRATION WATCHDOG: TRUMP IS '9TH MEMBER OF GANG OF 8'
'Every politician pushing an amnesty says it's not really an amnesty'
GREG COROMBOS
news director for Radio America.

A leading amnesty foe is blasting Donald Trump for moving far away from his earlier proposal on how to handle the millions of people in the country illegally, and he said the Republican presidential nominee now holds a position largely identical to those offered by Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and the Senate’s Gang of Eight.
On Tuesday, Trump told the Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity that many people have approached him about softening his plan to create a national deportation force to expel everyone in the U.S. illegally.
“I’ve had very strong people come up to me, really great, great people come up to me. They’ve said, ‘Mr. Trump, I love you, but to take a person who’s been here for 15 or 20 years and throw them and the family out. It’s so tough, Mr. Trump.’ I have it all the time,” said Trump on “Hannity” Tuesday night.
He then explained why allowing those who followed the law since entering the country illegally would not amount to amnesty.
“They’ll pay back taxes. They have to pay taxes. There’s no amnesty as such. There’s no amnesty,” Trump said.
But Center for Immigration Studies Executive Director Mark Krikorian told WND and Radio America this is a stunning reversal for the candidate who won the GOP nomination based largely upon his commitment to secure the border and remove those living here illegally. He said this new Trump approach doesn’t seem to differ much at all from the 2013 Gang of Eight bill that passed the U.S. Senate but died in the House of Representatives.
“Not that much, honestly,” Krikorian said. “The Gang of Eight was obviously a lot more detailed with a lot more explicit, whereas Trump is talking off the top of his head. But really, he is now the unofficial ninth member of the Gang of Eight.
“You’ve got to wonder when Jeb (Bush) was watching this on TV, he probably spit out his drink and started yelling, ‘That’s my immigration plan!'”
He said Trump used the same verbal tactics that amnesty supporters also employ.
“He was using phrases like ‘it’s not really an amnesty’ or ‘it’s not an amnesty as such’ and ‘they’ll pay back taxes.’ Those are buzzwords of the pro-amnesty people. Every politician pushing an amnesty says it’s not really an amnesty,” he said.
Krikorian asserted that, just like 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney, Trump doesn’t speak the language of conservatives and really has no idea what they believe.
“The guy has been running on immigration for a year,” Krikorian said. “And he still doesn’t have the three bullet-point summary that you need to be able to articulate if you’re running for office on your signature issue. You need to know something about your signature issue. He doesn’t. Nothing.”
Krikorian believes it’s that disconnect with conservatives that led Trump to mistakenly conclude that the party base favored mass deportation through deportation squads. He said Trump may well have offered that idea out of genuine concern over America’s poor border security, but he was going to have to ease his position eventually,
“He was going to have to walk back his ridiculous comments about deporting all the illegals. There was no question. No immigration restrictionist has ever called for that,” Krikorian said. “That’s just something that was sort of a gut reaction of his. That was Archie Bunker yelling at the television.”
In the wake of Trump’s major policy shift, there is some speculation that internal polling convinced Trump to change course. Krikorian said if that’s the case, it should not be taken as a sign that American oppose blocking citizenship or legalization for those in the U.S. illegally.

“What the polling would likely show is that saying you’re going to deport all 12 million illegal aliens in two years with deportation squads, or whatever term he used, that doesn’t poll well,” Krikorian explained. ” You bet it doesn’t. That’s why no one in the restrictionist movement has ever suggested anything like that.”
But Krikorian said Trump walked it back in entirely the wrong way, by listening to his Latino advisers, who all backed the Gang of Eight and the immigration proposals of President George W. Bush.
“They’re all Bush people,” he said. “They were all for the amnesty in the Gang of Eight, and they were all for the earlier Bush amnesty. Presumably, with this meeting, people were saying, ‘Well Donald, it’s not really an amnesty if you don’t give them citizenship and make them pay back taxes.'”
“They made the same assumption that Republican and even Democratic politicians always make – that there’s only two options. Either deport them all with deportation squads or amnesty. It is not a binary choice,” he said.
Krikorian said the right way to back away from mass deportation was obvious. In fact, it’s been on Trump’s website for months. The strategy includes consistent enforcement of the law, monitoring businesses as they hire and keeping track of visa holders to reduce the number of people in the U.S. illegally.
“Then when you re-establish control, you can have a discussion about what we do about the people who are left here,” he explained.
While Krikorian slams Trump for flip-flopping on his signature issue, he is far more critical of Hillary Clinton. Krikorian said Clinton has the most radical immigration plan ever put forward by a major party nominee in the U.S., to the point of refusing to deport anyone here illegally unless they are convicted of a violent felony. She would also grant amnesty to all current illegal immigrants.
“That is radical,” he said. “Trump does look pretty good compared to that. My point is not that they’re the same or that Trump is worse. Hillary is unbelievably worse on immigration, to the level of irresponsibility and dereliction of duty.”

Not a lot of personal thought in that cut and paste of yours. Still the last sentance is key, "Hillary is unbelievably worse on immigration, to the level of irresponsibility and dereliction of duty.” That alone speaks volumes.

Sure the rhetoric has changed a bit but I think the basic premise of DJT's immigration stance has remained constant. He still wants to follow current immigration law. Current immigration law says criminals are to be deported. He is not against legal immigration. A big mass deportation may not happen. Securing the borders and building a wall probably will. What I think the left doesn't understand about DJT is the right supports his policies. We don't just follow him blindly. DJT is the messenger not the message.

Mr. Ahrens, I ve always enjoyed your postings as not only instructional but hillarious at times. Im a little confused by your statement though. If he owes some very powerful people, what does it mean he's not out of the woods yet. I have pondered the very question of this post " What if" before. In my opinion, obama and all who have allowed him to do the things he has to this country are traitors to the republic. Speaking of which, it really shanks my ass when I hear commentators on tv, radio or even here on OPP refer to this country as a democracy. As you well know, it is NOT a democracy period!!!!! Have a good day sir

Yes and no. No this country is not supposed to be a democracy, it's supposed to be a representative republic. The problem is we have become more democratic, year after year, mission creep. The federal government was supposed to be limited, it has grown ever more unlimited. Ever notice, the further we stray away from constitutionalism, the worse our problems become. The left in this country think they are so smart. To me they don't look so smart.

DJT's immigration position may or may not have changed. His talk has changed but has he really changed his mind? Send them all back verses send just the criminals back verses just apply the laws we already have is different but not that different. Offering a pathway to citizenship is not a bad idea as long as criminals do not qualify. There has not been a change about building a wall. I have not seen blueprints, are we talking concrete or chain link fence? Whatever will secure our border is the point. We need to protect and defend our borders. Yes, some of the talk has changed but overall it it obvious that the intent has not changed. Protect our country from those who would do it harm, enforce the law, build a wall. It is a little early to get hung up in details. He still has to get elected before it can happen because for sure HRC isn't going to do any of it.

One thing for sure, DJT is a very sharp dresser. HRC will really set herself apart from him dressing like that. Perhaps we should look at the issues, yes, yes, yes. But does HRC think an outfit like that will distract the public from the issues? if so it's a good strategy.

Back to the original question, I am not a "true believer" so much as I am hopeful DJT can shake up the business as usual political system. Most people in this country are not happy with the federal government, congress has very low approval ratings, both sides of the isle. Mainstream politicians fear the changes DJT represents. For sure liberals do not like him. Many conservatives have been frustrated with the republican party. DJT will not likely cause the end of the republican party, but he stands to change it. I for one, would like to see those changes. Yes, I support DJT, but I am not a true believer. I will not follow blindly like a brainwashed sycophant. I think you sort of have to be a true believer to follow HRC, but that's just how I see it.

That picture of DJT doing the 'choke/gag' is truly funny. It also highlights one of DJT's strengths. He connects with people. He is not another stodgy, up-tight, scripted politician. He is real; that kind of thing does not work if scripted. Some people find it unbecoming I'll grant you. Some find it inappropriate. Most of us just say "It's Donald." He is what he is, not like the classic politician who has a political persona and then a completely different personal one. With DJT you get the real man, not a plastic faker. I think that kind of honesty is sorely missing in politics. Just ask the secret service, that's not what you get with HRC.

I think it is wonderful that 70 elite republicans would sign a letter to undermine DJT. The puts them on record as to where they stand. DJT received more primary votes than any Republican in history. To not support him is to be out of touch with the constituency. The money will not be stopped but one of 2 things will happen. HRC wins and the Republican party continues to be out of touch with the people. More likely, however, DJT wins, the conservative base finally gets some real representation, and America's direction starts to get back on track. The 70 names on the letter..., they can all become Democrats because they have shown that their own self interests are more important to them than the will of the party. Actually that would make them fit right in with the Democrats.
