1. Guns do not kill, people kill,
2. Better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it.
3. Within ten supervised sessions and 50 rounds fired per session, a trainee can hit what he shoots at reliably up to ranges of 50 to 75 feet.
4. Having a 12 to 15 round clip for the gun covers the misses expected, and a possible second or third shooter appearing as well.
5. Children easily learn to shoot and do it safely, a skill they can draw upon as needed.
6. States with open carry laws permit citizens to carry a weapon openly on the street, and in your car, but not in schools, or government buildings and courts.
7. States with concealed carry laws permit citizens to carry a weapon concealed on their person, but not in schools, government buildings and courts.
8. If the proprietor of an establishment posts a sign forbidding weapons on his property, his wishes must be honored.
9. Police departments report nation-wide that over two-and-a-half million instances of a gun being used by a citizen to thwart a crime every year. Given that about five percent of these would have been vicious assaults, rapes, and murders, over a hundred-and-twenty-five-thousand serious crimes would have been stopped by ordinary citizen gun owners.
10. This must be compared to the approximate average number of actual killings at twenty-thousand, and suicides at twenty-thousand, for an average of forty-thousand gun deaths per year. But for the gun owners stepping in, this number of 20-thousand killings might exceed another twenty-thousand or more deaths, plus the suicides, resulting in a new total of sixty-thousand deaths per year.
Having guns pays off!
11. Home defense is a major reason for a citizen to purchase a gun. This arises because the response time for police to arrive at the home after a 911 call ranges from ten minutes to 15 minutes or greater. That is enough time for professionals to ransack the home and assault, rape or shoot anyone they desire and then flee well before the police arrive. Thus, the homeowner needs to be able to defend his family and himself during that wait time.
12. The main four types of guns a household might own are: the pistol; the carbine; the rifle; and the shotgun:
a. Pistols, a handgun, are of two types, the ```````````automatic, clip-fed weapon with 10 to 15 ```````````rounds per clip; and the revolver, that usually has a 6-round capacity. These weapons are principally built to use specific ammunition, either 22 caliber, 32 caliber, 38 caliber, 9 mm, 10 mm, 44 and 45 caliber. The recommended size for home use lies between 38 cal. and 45 cal, with significant usage observed of 9 mm automatics. The 9 mm weapon has good hitting power, and much less recoil than the higher caliber guns, thus it is easier for both men and women to handle.
b. The carbine is a small rifle that is usually chambered to use pistol ammunition, for the most part 9 mm. The carbine has several advantages over pistols: it is lower in kick, easier to shoot accurately, and it has a much longer range. Consistent hits at over 200 yards is quite feasible. But they are more awkward to handle in close quarters with their plus or minus 30 inch lengths, or so.
c.The rifle is the hunter's choice. With lengths of 36 inches to even 42 inches, they use popular ammo ranging from .223, 5.56 mm 7.62mm, 30-30 caliber, 308 caliber, and 44/40 caliber rounds. Normally clip- fed, they hold from 8 to perhaps 30 rounds. These weapons can be fired accurately to very long ranges, in the 600 yard to 1,000 yard distance or greater, and utilize telescopic sights for improved aim. The more famous rifle today in the US is the AR-15, using 556 NATO ammo which is only semi-automatic, and light. It is erroneously classed as an ' Assault Weapon” by the ignorant, possibly because it has a certain fearsome look to it, and a military version was produced, the M-16, which is indeed an Assault Weapon, that looks very similar in profile, but is a quite different weapon.
d. Shotguns, perhaps the most versatile of weapons, since it can employ a wide range of ammo fit for birds, small animals, and even large animals. They come with single barrels, double barrels, and tube-fed magazine automatics and pump-fed mechanisms holding from 3 to 5 or more rounds. The usual gauges are: 410 inch; 20 gauge and 12 gauge, in short, medium and standard shell lengths, and loads of various sizes of shot and slugs. At short ranges a shotgun sends out a pattern of projectiles that make it much easier to score a hit on a moving animal or other target. If, however, one loads a slug, effectively you have a rifle with a heavy projectile that at short ranges will take down most big animals.
Both the 20 gauge and the 410” are excellent home defense weapons because of their hitting power and lighter recoil.
16. Many people claim that racking a pump- action shotgun scares intruders away by the sound alone. Perhaps it does, but keep the weapon loaded for use anyway!
17. Protection of children at school. The basic idea has been to employ two trained and armed safety officers in every school, nominally policemen, but veterans and other citizens could perform these duties quite well also with training. As a backup to this provision, a number of volunteer teachers would also be trained and armed, and be required to carry their weapons on them all the time they are at school. In light of prior shootings, a teacher may be faced with a sudden direct encounter with a shooter bursting into the classroom weapon in hand, and will thus have mere seconds to draw his weapon and fire if he is to prevent the shooter from attacking the children. Direct radio communication at all times with the Safety Officers, the principal's office, and any other armed people in the school is mandatory. A radio frequency connection that allows communication with the police force must be required.
18. What if you shoot an intruder in your home? An Immediate call to 911 is key to establishing your innocence, followed by placing your weapon at a distance from you unloaded. When the police arrive, they will handcuff you and try to interrogate you as to what happened. You should refuse to answer their questions citing your willingness to talk only when your lawyer is present. The police may misconstrue anything you say and create legal problems for you that are difficult to sort out. Your best option is to button up your lip. You will probably be taken to HQ and jailed under “protective custody” not arrest, to await your lawyer and a proper full interrogation. Once your innocence is established, you will be released.
