I watched a Republican lawmaker explain that the GOP, to win next year, have "to be seen to be supporting Trump's agenda". That's as dumb as the Democrats strategy. How about see what the majority of voters are concerned about? Any party relying solely on it's base to get elected/re-elected, are in for a rude awakening - because they refuse to admit that each party's base is a MINORITY. That's right, a minority. Registered Republicans are at about 23% of the population and Democrats at about the same, meaning that dems and repubs COMBINED represent less than half of all eligible voters. That's a minority.
Calculating election wins, gives no credence or thought to what voters really want/need. Those doing those calculations just don't care. There are only about 80 million fully vested Trump supporters, who are an even smaller minority. That's about 1/4 of voters. Since when does the wants of such a small minority, determine the calculus for the whole country? To be sure, gerrymandered districts only need to cater to their base, but even they might be dismayed to see THIER wants sublimated to someone else's, since not nearly every district at risk next year is a Trump district.
3/4 of the country did not sign on to the Trump agenda, they want to see THIER agenda addressed. Of those 1/4 who did sign on, even they might like to see some real progress towards making THIER lives better, and less concern about optics and posturing. To date, there is no real "Trump agenda", there is only a desire to see some campaign slogans come to life, but even Trump himself has dismissed half of those. PEOPLE vote, not party's, and the people would appreciate having THIER needs addressed in those calculations. Unfortunately, both dems and repubs seem to feel that telling the people what they will, or will not, be concerned about, is good politics.
If you have cancer, you don't give a shit about someone else's diabetes. If you can't make ends meet, working 60 hours a week, you don't give a rats ass about the plight of the overburdened wealthy, or the helpless poor. From what I can gather, more and more people are coming to the conclusion, that neither democrats nor republicans have their best interests at heart - and never will. Neither party has the capacity, or the desire, to be concerned about what people really want or need, they're too busy making calculations without those people.
Our political process has become a non stop ad campaign - whoever creates the most clever marketing strategy wins. The problem is...............what we end up buying is bullshit and lots of it. We have hit our proverbial bottom - at least I hope we have. I shudder to think about things getting worse.
