I am interested in what others think of this topic. I would appreciate knowing the reasons behind both pro and con positions. Thank you.

To pass the citizenship test you're supposed to know how to speak English. Business all over the world is conducted in English. Before the English speaking people came to America Indians, Mexicans and many more diverse tongues were spoken. Over time English became the predominant language. Eventually all business transactions were conducted in English. When my great grandparents came to this great country they told anyone that would listen that one of the proudest moments of their lives was when they would walk in somewhere and be able to speak to people in English. They said that one act maid them fell like true Americans. Years ago people were proud to learn the language. Now with some people telling immigrants don't worry about assimilating you see the disastrous results. Children who grow up not learning the language are at a disadvantage, in school and when seeking a job. The only time I speak Hebrew is when I talk to relatives back in the old country. I live in America and I'm proud to speak English. Thank you and GOD BLESS

American English should be the recognized language of the United States of America. The different ethnic groups can retain their own language and culture, as the American Indians. If a foreigner comes here, they should comply by our standards but do not force us to comply to their former country standards.

In January everyone who wants english as the "official" language should get their wish.

Witht he rpeublicans in charge, this should become a priority. All the republicans have to do is write the bill, agree to the wording, send it to the president as a stand-alone law, and all of the complainers will get their wish.

Are you calling boehner and magoo and the boys right now concrning this "urgent" legislation?

English WAS the original language when the USA came into existence. The Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Federal Papers, etc, etc were all written in English.

You could not be more wrong. In Louisiana they spoke French, In Florida they spoke Spanish, and in Mexico they spoke Spanish. Also, throughout all of those territories, their were many languages spoken by the native Americans. The original English speaking area of the U.S. was the 13 colonies, where many Indians lived and spoke their languages. What this thread is really about is discounting the non-English speaking portion of our country's culture and history. Quit trying to rewrite history. We already have an English copy of all governmental forms.

I think that English should be the official language of the nation. It has been since the beginning and it works, why change? A common language binds us all to this country.

Since this such an IMPORTANT issue for so many who post here, then the REPUBLICAN house and senate should make this a PRIORITY when they convene in January.

Hopefully they are writing their list of things they want congress to do for them, but it is much easier and simpler to whine, piss and moan and complain

Yes there is. But I don't want to pull up to a polling place to place my vote and there's signs in Spanish as well. If your not proficient enough in English you shouldn't be allowed to vote. Just look at the bozo in office now. And how many non English speaking people do you think voted for this.

So, if you are a citizen of our country, you shouldn't be allowed to vote, if MajorAhrens doesn't like something about you? That will work after you are Dictator, but for now citizens are allowed to vote.
What the hell is wrong with all you conservatives that don't like other people, even if they are good citizens? Oh, I can answer. Somehow you think you are more important than other people. News flash, you are not.

Let' see if a precedent does not already exist. Do we not fly our nations flag and no other? Do we not have a national anthem? Do we not recognize the bald eagle as our nations symbol? Are the highway signs on the nation's interstate system in anything but english? Do we not celebrate numerous national holidays that recognize American achievement?

I could go on, but it would be redundant. The fact is we need to recognize english as the nations official language. One is free to speak whatever they want in their own communites, but if they want to become a citizen of this great country they need to speak and understand english.

I have republicans in my neighborhood that fly the yellow "Don't tread on me" flag. Some of our state capitals fly the flags of other countries, such as the French flag in Louisiana. Also, Don't they fly the confederate battle flag on the state capital of South Carolina? None of those are illegal, nor do they need to be, with the exception of the confederate battle flag.

when all those places spoke the language they did those places were not part of the United States and Mexico never has been, I think you must have one of the participants at the tower of Babble, you don't seem to understand anything

My point exactly. You already have to learn some English in order to survive here. Why do we need to make a law for more?

Once again, my point. At what point if we take land, or buy land from a foreign country, do we force the people to now speak English. We don't in Puerto Rico. We didn't in the Philippines. We didn't in Cuba.

I'm no more important than the next. Why do liberals always assume. I said if you don't know the language you can't understand the issues. That's why liberals love low information voters. Otherwise you'd never win a dog catcher position. And being I fought for the right to say whats on my mind,(and even yours, your welcome), I will say it. Now don't you have an abortion to go to? You know suck the brains out of innocent babies. Or protest the sentence of a serial killer? Make sure your sign is in English now ya hear.
