A few of you have already commented about the lack of full information in this story. The biggest secret in stories like this, and this is not the only one going around these days, is buried in the concept that the owner has no choice but to increase his prices to cover the cost increase. What if the owner, who "works hard for his money," is already, bottom line, making the equivalent of $40 or $75 or even more per hour for the time he puts in at his retail establishment. Sure, the owner has made a sizeable investment in the facility, and is covering the cost of the materials consumed by the business and everything else, but not out of his/her own "wages." For all we know, a significant portion of the surcharge ends up in the owner's pocket. We all are told what the increase in labor costs does for the employees, but the more important piece of the puzzle is the business' bottom line. Maybe in a business this size, the owner's per hour 'wage' per hour would drop from that $75 to say, $74 (a 2% reduction) if he/she didn't impose that surcharge, while his workers each get a 16% increase. That is the disparity here.

Why should any business owner who has the full ownership of losing everything if employees salary and benefits prices him out of business are the employees going to give back money if his business fails. Don't be so stupid Liberal.
Better to have the extra charge shown on ticket, than raise prices of food on menu. The raising of food prices should only be when the owner is socked with higher prices from the supplier due to drought and other natural disasters which affect food production. Just don't forget to tip the waitstaff as they work hard for the customers in a lot of cases. I know, as I have waited tables in my teens to early 30's and back then I made about $1.00 an hour wage and tips made up the difference of starving or having food on the table at home and paying rent in most cases.
What is wrong with you? Why should a person who put his life and money where his mouth is when he bought or started the business pay for state enforced wage increases?

If you ever payed someone to work you might look at this differently.

I would gladly pay the 35 cents. If you can afford to eat out then you can pay it. If you can't it's much cheaper to eat at home. If you ever worked you would be an idiot to complain about someone earning a little more money. Amazing how brainwashed some are to the point of cutting their own throats.

There is always a cost to doing business, if every jackass put a surcharge for each increase in expense we would have a cheese and gas surcharge for delivered pizzas a scissor or shaving cream surcharge at the barber and a bag and refrigeration surcharge at the produce market. Some discount joints already charge for bags or put old boxes out for folks to take things away in but this is mostly a marketing gimmick to make you think you are getting a great deal. In New Zeland and Austraulia the minimum wage is already about $15 an hour US and the fast food joints are doing just fine, they also have fewer people living in poverty and a thriving middle class.

Yes it is true that in Minny they pay $6.50 for small companies where tipping is customary. This does not affect the rest of the staff that does not work on tips and they are paid at full minimum wage.

As usually you only gave part of the facts. the minimum is going to $8 for companies with over $500,00 in annual revenues companies under $500,000 went to $6.50 from $5.25 which I think the diner falls under. You didn't said how many employee the diner has or how many hours they work a week. How much does he pay them now. He could raise the price of his food a nickel and more then offset any increase in minimum wages
Kevyn, have you looked at the cost of doing business since Obamination has been in office, I have a small business and its stifling, Taxes and Obamination medical costs and benefits are astronomical and new rules and regulations. Obamination is an idiot Marxist and is causing small and large Corporations to either reduce the work force or fewer hours or just plain move out of Country. Do you want to pay $10 for a Micky D big mac I don't think so we are not New Zealand or Australia if you like them so much move there. Otherwise lets get rid of the 40 Million Illegal Aliens that have 13-15 Million American Jobs and put America back on track that this Sunni Muslim Marxist Illegal alien NOT BLACK for you Morons Half Breed Obamination has supported and wants Amnesty for to destroy our way of life and lead us into ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT.
