A teacher with a gun who panics might shoot a student instead of the shooter.

On the other hand if she didn't have a weapon the shooter can kill them all. You're talking the possibility of one student getting shot by the teacher v the whole classroom dead by the shooter.

A law passed by Tennessee congress would allow teachers to carry. They would need a mental check and 40 hours of training and the approval of the school official. It will likely be signed by the governor. Do you think this is a good idea? Should we expand this to other states?

Concealed-carry citizens are the most rational, reserved and self-disciplined people in the populace.
Combine those traits with a quality training course and you've got a powerful group of folks to protect our kids.
Do you have a problem with this statement ? What's your alternative ?
And the Seniors? Not only would students have added protection, but there would be some wisdom, some life-experience roaming the halls.
Yes, XXX, GREAT idea.

Expand, YES! But: Case by Case, State by State.

This has always been a thorny issue for me.. first reaction is , OH YES...

I have no doubt that those teachers who gave lives to block doors and hide students would do the job and do it as needed..

But than,, where will Mrs Smith keep her weapon? top right hand drawer, all 30 students would know just where to find that gun and would show the class, teacher and the world what was what.. they would do it.. shot every one they did not like..

So I may never be sure.. But the comment AuntiE made about investing in more security rather than more administration seems to be the best so far..

The punch board doors have been the death of as number of teachers and even students trying to keep out the shooter.. better control of entry, montering of the building, should work but did not in the texas border town..

I should also say, the image of the math teacher walking with a gun on his hip is not one I want to dominate school day memories for any kid... but compared to recall of the shooting it pales as an issue..

So, in each case the details should be worked out very carefully... but is seems we all agree something must be done.. But turning schools into armed camps should not be the goto..

I will add,, in my high school the makeup of the teachers included no less than 8 ex marines, one airborne, and I am sure a few more vets.. all of whom would have made joke of any shooter trying to have a blood bath at our school.. so teach selection could well be changed by this rule..

Very well thought out post. I think the details will get worked out. I'm waiting to see how it works.

Excellent idea since it would make shooters think twice about targeting schools!!

Well Auntie some people in Tennessee who didn't like the bill were horrified at the prospect of the teacher carrying a weapon. I must say a thinking person could think it could become mandatory or they could not think

Heaven forbid that their children would be protected by an armed teacher!

Duh,

I didn’t know they had stopped making gun safes for the teacher to keep their gun in.

Gun free zones are shooting ranges for those who want to kill know that no one has a gun to fight back with that's why they should be band.

Gun free zones are like target practice for those that want to kill for no one had a gun to shoot back at them

it is all about accessibility for the quick move when the shooter is running up the hall. already locked, loaded and finger on the trigger...

Other than that reality, it is a good idea... where would the placement be?? by the door, in the cloak rooom? next to the flag? near the black broad? do they still use those?

How about the broom closet? The more I write silly, the more the question seems real. by the teachers desk?
