...Something else you obviously didn't think about is that the door isn't just closed to criminals... It's closed to ALL immigrants over a certain limit. This is because some Americans, pretending to love LEGAL immigrants really don't like them at all and want to keep their numbers down. Before the 1964 Immigration Act, there were actual quotas, based on race. But that's just too racist for most modern Americans to stomach so now the limits are implemented by intentional inefficiencies to create the illusion of a crisis in which we simply can't process them all, so the ones at the back of the line have to wait longer.

The problem there is that these people just walked 4,000 miles or so to GET to the front door and they have nowhere else to go. The longer they have to wait, the higher the risk of suffering from hunger, disease and violence. This is why Trump's attempts to keep the "horrible immigrants" out always failed until the pandemic hit, giving him an excuse to close the border with Title 42. And this is the reason why Biden pulled Title 42 as soon as the pandemic was over, because it was INHUMANE! Not that people like you or Trump care.

So, if we bring your ridiculous analogy a little closer to reality, the welcome matt is actually a very small one, most of the criminally minded are getting through the front door anyway and the vast majority of immigrants you are shooting are just good people trying to survive and save their families.

There's no "what-ifs" involved here. Some people are racist. Simple fact. Among those racists there has always been a push to keep immigrants out, especially when so many immigrants are brown. Simple fact. Given the obvious immorality of racism, there has been no way to simply make all brown people illegal, so the next best thing is to limit their numbers, either by quotas which we did until 1964, when it became morally indefensible, or through the intentional inefficiency of the immigration process, where the system can only process a small percentage of them, leaving the rest in a state of limbo where survival is questionable.

This inefficiency gives the racists the ability to hide their bigotry behind the fact that there *IS* a legal path while at the same time, having a legal excuse to make any brown person that wasn't lucky enough to pass through the inefficiency, illegal.

A racist will obviously deny this... probably by dismissing it as speculation and/or suggesting people shut up about it and play with barbie dolls instead.
