Open hearing- questioning time is limited to 3 minutes per representative - to short to get to the important information.

Closed hearing is long and arduous time to get tough. (some of Trump’s family questioning session lasted 10 hours)

Why did Republicans refuse to let Hunter Biden testify to an open hearing? Because they didn’t want a repeat of Hillary Clinton's testifying before the GOP-led Benghazi committee, basically making fools of 'em.

Mind you…this was the GOP of six years ago, not the assorted coterie of clowns and buffoons that lead today’s party.

If Hunter Biden testified openly as he requested, it would have actually been worse because it would become painfully obvious that the GOP had NOTHING to question him about and it would have been posturing and deceit in place of facts and evidence. That’s why they refused to allow the proceedings to be held publicly and why Biden refused to appear.

Just like his father’s “impeachment” hearings, the GOP wants to preen and deceive, but they don’t want to perform their actual jobs of governing or leading.

Agreed. The GOP has become the party of greed and lies. And the ignorance and stupidity become obvious when publicly exposed.

Not at all. They have no other logical reason for refusing to hold public hearings. Their only rational reason is to hide themselves and the truth. That has been the standard for the Republicans for years.

Then why not question him in public? The only thing that makes sense is so they can hide the truth. Pretty typical of the GOP.

So they should let his co conspirators know what Hunter divulged? Why to get their alibis/lies together? You really don't understand how investigations and the law work. Not to mention that the questioning format would have altered.

He was also told that he could speak at a formal questioning at a later date. Doesn't matter, he'd only plead the 5th or say "I don't recall" hundreds of times

From David W. Rudlin

Hunter Biden has refused an order by congress to give a closed door deposition. Should he be held in contempt and imprisoned, since nobody is above the law?

Gym Jordan apparently is.

Ditto Scott Perry, Andy Biggs, Mo Brooks and — ah, memories! — Kevin McCarthy.

All five of them ignored subpoenas from the J6 Committee, even though they’re all members of Congress.

Steve Bannon ignored a court-ordered subpoena, was found guilty of contempt, but still hasn’t gone to jail or changed his life in any way possible.

I’m old enough to remember when people thought subpoenas were something that had to be obeyed. But that was before trump made lawlessness the law of the land.

That’s the easy part.

It was clear why the J6 Committee wanted testimony from people involved with an attempt to overthrow the will of the American people… and shit on the walls of Congress. But Hunter Biden? He’s not an elected official. He holds no government post. He cannot be “impeached.” So why is he being investigated by a bunch of bozos who should be working on avoiding a government shutdown, the border they claim to care so much about, and funding Ukraine/Israel? Isn’t that the job of DOJ?

Of course it is. And DOJ has been investigating Hunter since 2018, when trump appointed a prosecutor to do just that. That prosecutor just upped the charges against Hunter, albeit for the same tax violations for which a plea deal was previously in place.

What, then, has the “Oversight Committee” got that requires their extra-legal involvement?

Four words: “The Biden Crime Family.” That’s their attempt to smear Joe by association with his son. And so far, they have provided NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that Joe was involved with, or benefited from, Hunter’s activities.

The last time they held a public hearing, the first three “expert” witnesses CALLED BY THE REPUBLICANS said there was no grounds to impeach the president.

Just today Chuck Grassley, who heads the equivalent movement in the Senate, said he has seen no link to the president.

So what is going on?

Donald J. Trump. Despite his ridiculous claims of being proud to have been impeached, and doing it “for us,” it hurts him every time he’s referred to as “the disgraced, twice impeached, quadruply indicted former president.”

So he has demanded an impeachment inquiry. That way he can say “Joe’s getting impeached, I got impeached, it happens to everybody.”

What crime are they inquiring about? Don’t know yet. That’s the point of the inquiry: to find something they can charge The Biden Crime Family with.

Something that a prosecutor who spent 5 years doing exactly that couldn’t come up with.

It’s performative assholery, nothing more.

Despite the heavily biased way the OP phrased the question, the Supreme Court has held that the Congressional power of the subpoena is not absolute. Congress cannot simply open investigations and intrude into the private lives of individuals.

So one option open to Hunter is to challenge the subpoena, asking what is the legitimate need for his testimony… on an investigation in search of a crime.

He could also point out that if members of Congress got so caught up in what has been ruled in court to be an insurrection they had to ask for a presidential pardon don’t have to show up, he shouldn’t either.

But he’s smarter than that (or at least his lawyers are). He said sure, he’d show up — provided it was public testimony.

Comer & Co. panicked, for a couple of reasons. One is that Comer has accused the president of a “suspicious” $200,000 loan to his brother that had no paperwork or interest charged. You know who else lent his brother $200,000 with no paperwork or interest? Representative James Comer. And he does NOT want that being highlighted under televised questioning from the Dems.

Comer also highlighted Hunter Biden’s use of LLC’s. (For reference, Donald J. Trump has more than 500 LLC’s.) You’re never going to believe this, but do you know who else has an LLC? James Comer! And because it’s co-owned by a major donor and his wife, he doesn’t have to report its extensive land holdings in his financial reports.

Strangely, he doesn’t want to talk about that on camera.

Also, closed doors let the Committee control the narrative. They will tell the press the story they want broadcast, not what actually happened. They learned their lesson about live coverage the last time around, when the aforementioned expert witnesses said they had diddly.

If you think this Clown Show has been worse than usual, we’re just getting to the best parts. Comer said you couldn’t have an open hearing because the Dems would embarrass themselves. If that were true, you’d think he’d WANT live coverage so the American people could see for themselves what jerks the D’s are.

Better yet, Gym Jordan said that with closed doors, there would be all sorts of filibusters. Even though that’s not a thing in committee testimony.

In other words, they didn’t have their excuses prepared, and got caught with their pants down.

And then came Hunter’s masterstroke. He showed up on the day of the subpoena. “Everyone keeps asking ‘Where’s Hunter?’ Well, here I am, suckahs!

In other words: He. Showed. Up. Which is more than Gym Jordan did. But he refused to be used for political theater that has no judicial purpose and is simply another one of “the things we do for Orange Jesus.”

Good on him. If the Committee ever finds some actual evidence, they can subpoena him again. And maybe then they’ll be able to face an admitted addict in the light of day.

The January 6th shamitte didn't have the authority to issue subpoenas, do to its construction. If they tried to go after members of Congress that would be challenged. They chose not to, I don't think Pelosi wanted to be subpoenad. Which she surely would have been.

LOL. The Republicans are following the same script that the Democrats held for the impeachment inquiry for Trump's 1st partisan impeachment regarding closed-door depositions. Now the Dimdems are crying foul? Hypocrisy and amnesia for the lefties. It would behoove the Republicans to remind them of that fact.
