They had high taxes. But they were still officially the owners of their businesses. That is hardly unfettered capitalism.

In capitalism the means of production is privately owned. But you have left out mercantilism, often confused with capitalism. Under mercantilism, the government protects certain businesses at the expense of others and their employees. The time of the Baron Robbers was one of almost unfettered mercantilism. In recent times, a blatant example is government bailouts of favored companies while letting others sink. True capitalism would allow them to rise or fall by their own merit.

if Donald Trump manages to worm his unpleasant way back into office, he has no plans to leave — ever. Trump will remain in power until the day he dies, and then his hand-picked successor will replace him.

this isn’t some paranoid left-wing fantasy.

right now, Republicans are working to make this happen — and they’re not even bothering to keep it a secret. they’re bragging about it. they’ve published their plan. it has a name: the 2025 Project.

their scheme is to purge the entire government rank and file and replace them with Trump loyalists. that’s right, everybody — from the highest levels of the federal government all the way down to your local dogcatcher. and they’re not waiting until 2025 — they’ve already started recruiting foot-soldiers.

once everything is in place, we’ll stop having stupid little things like elections, or freedom, or democracy.

Still in Texas. And seriously, my life, here and today, is pretty darn good.
The economy sucks, and I am VERY worried about the authoritarian government people like you are trying to change America into, but other than that, life is good. My wife and I are 45 years in love, and get by well enough financially. My kids and grandkids are all relatively healthy and doing okay. Of course, I am a faithful Christian, and an eternal optimist, so I have much to look forward to, and I that helps me enjoy life.
Clearly, nothing will ever make you happy, and that is a shame.
