I have studied the absolute best way to take the final journey we all must take. Many different people I knew, who passed during my life, gave me examples. Some were good, some were bad, and some were pretty ugly. I am not happy with any of them, YET.

Probably the least bad way, to go if you got the choice, was the way one of my grandfathers went. The story in the family, and it may not be true, was that he knew he was going, decided to start up the lawnmower and then fell over dead cutting the grass, so my grandmother would not see him die. A neighbor found him. My other grandfather woke up dead in his bed. Not sure that was better, because my other grandmother found him.

I sure as hell do not want to go the way either of my parents went, rotting away in a sick bed for months.

I was close to death once coming out of surgery, and I knew it, but I really didn't care. Next thing I knew, was hordes of doctors hovering and a very weak feeling throughout my body. I only came to care when I saw my wife finally. It was suddenly my duty to show her that I was alright.
Death is something that only the living perceive.

None of us wants to be mentally impaired at the end of our lives, but I observed some relatives who should have been in great pain weeks before they died, but their minds never registered the pain. I've seen others who had their minds clear as their bodies were failing and they suffered greatly. For those of us watching them die, a feeling of helplessness was all we had.

One day I will be on the other end, looking back at those who will come to see me the last time. I wonder if I will be hoping for the suffering to end, or will I be fighting to live one more minute longer ?

As we trade thoughts on life and death, at the moment, we certainly would fight for life.
Given other circumstances, we might pray that our loved ones let us go.
For three years I've suffered Trigeminal Neuralgia. Pain in the face. Not life threatening, but 10 on the pain scale. If this pain were constant, and for some, it is, I wouldn't, couldn't, go on living.
It sets a perspective on life and its worth.
Pure discipline to endure the pain of Trigeminal Neuralgia. No known cure.

I hope you find a way to manage this condition. Until now I had never heard of it. I imagine it took a long time just to get a diagnosis.

I was diagnosed by a student doctor who was sitting in with my doctor while I described the symptoms, thinking that it was a mass infection. Big guy, Russian, student, said, it sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia. And as we ticked off the symptoms, within 10 minutes, they figured it out. Very rare condition. It took two days to get the expensive pills to the pharmacy. But even pills don't eliminate it all.
Pain pills will not work on Trigeminal Neuralgia.
Epilepsy pills do, sometimes.
Very painful condition. No known cure.

My brother died of a brain tumor years ago after about 10 years of suffering. It took 6 months from the onset of symptoms to get a correct diagnosis. I often think those 6 months was crucial. He kept having seizures and nobody could tell him why. Then he found a doctor who found the tumor.

When they finally decided to operate, they cut a flap of skull to get at the tumor. He was home and two weeks later he seemed good as new. I played street hockey with him.

However he got an infection in his skull and they had to go back in, and afterward he was never right. The tumor came back and he deteriorated, and he went from institution to institution until he passed. I have a distrust of doctors. No way to know if he got the best treatment or not.

My sincerest sympathies. The thought of a tumor is the reason I went in the first place. No tumor.
I have all the symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia, and it's not always there. It's unpredictable, sneaky, pops up whenever it wants and then leaves at its leisure.
I agree with you on the competence of doctors. They aren't infallible. My cousin went for 2 years misdiagnosed for liver cancer. Died at 33 because of the doctor.
Otherwise, I'm glad that we are healthy.

We are all getting older and losing more family and friends all of the time. I'm 67 and lately people younger and in better health than me are either having severe strokes or dropping dead from aneurysms. I have 2 healthy grand kids, so I ain't complaining. I see myself as merely a link in the chain of my family which will go on when I leave this world.

As my minister always says, " try to live a good life so I won't have to lie giving your eulogy. "

I figure what he don't know about, he won't have to lie about.

Oops, I saw some wit there. But don't change your OPP handle.
I have a funeral wardrobe. The rest is jeans and gym shorts. Don't need anything else. I'm either shopping, or in the gym, or at a funeral.
I'm 79 in a few weeks and don't think I'll have anyone left to attend my funeral. But I'll be the last to know.
Keep on living and loving, you are a good man.

I try to be humorous, but here is the ultimate genius who pulled off the greatest gag in the history of funerals. I wish I had known this guy.

What, that you were not really dead ? Would she have to return the life insurance checks and flowers ?
