An interesting perspective. I'm not sure if I fully agree with everything Dr. Yan is stating, but it is quite interesting nonetheless!!! I would be interested in CD's take on this interview.

"Dr Yan Li-Meng joins Australian podcaster, Maria Zeee to give us her perspective on what’s really happening in Shanghai.

Dr Yan was one of the first scientists outside the Wuhan Institute of Virology to analyze SARS-CoV-2 in January of 2020. She fled her position as a virologist at the University of Hong Kong and defected to the US in April of that year, after conclusively determining that the virus was engineered in the lab to be a bioweapon.

For the past two years, Dr Yan has asserted that SARS-CoV-2 was developed by the People’s Liberation Army in 2017, the purpose of which is “to destroy your economy, destroy your social order, destroy your civilization. Finally, [you’ll be] controlled by Chinese Communist Party.”

Horrible journalism... They misspelled proper nouns like "Qindao" (proper spelling Qingdao) and provided false information like Xi being on his first term (he's finishing his second)...

In all honesty, I don't have much respect for this woman... Tucker repeatedly asked her to provide the proof for her accusations, which to this day she has to this day failed to do.... Her theory is ridiculous as well... Zhengzeming is no longer a contender in the government...

And her assertion that the courts in China could never overturn a government mandate like the judge in the US did is equally false... Just last year the courts ruled that the government cannot forcefully vaccinate individuals, nor make their vaccination status a requirement for various rights.... That has been upheld to this day... The government is currently launching a huge campaign to get the 10% of the population that is still unvaxxed to change its mind, and the close to 30% of the population that hasn't taken the booster to get boosted....

Thanks for the feedback, CD.
I read bit's and pieces that there are political rivals of Xi, and that his hold on power is not as strong as we are led to believe. I take it that you don't feel that way, and that Jiang Zemin is not a credible threat to his power.

I've also read an article speculating that the lockdown in Shanghai was intended to exacerbate the inflationary pressures in the US and Europe, and cause financial instability.

While I do not put a lot of belief in either theory, it does puzzle me why China would take such dramatic steps, and cause such a disruption to the 25 million(?) citizens and economic output with these prolonged lockdowns. All evidence that I have seen and read point to the futility and ineffectiveness of this approach. All for what 8-10 cases of Covid in city of 25 million. There has got to be more to this story than what we are being told.

8-10 cases???? Over 20,000 at the moment...

The municipal government was very unprepared for lockdown... And the federal government was slow to send aid...

Now they argue over jurisdiction and point fingers at each other...

And how many people have died because of this lockdown? How many have died of this strain of Covid? Instead of fixing the problem, Xi seems to have just doubled down!

I was thinking back to an article I read at the inception of the lockdown that was announced on March 27. I think I mistakenly took the number of deaths instead of the number of cases. In any event, I googled "how many cases reported at the beginning of the Shanghai lockdown" and found the following:

"Shanghai detected another 3,500 cases of infection on Sunday, though all but 50 were people who tested positive for the coronavirus but were not showing symptoms of COVID-19. While people who are asymptomatic can still infect others, China categorizes such cases separately from “confirmed cases” — those in people who are sick — leading to much lower totals in daily reports."

The issue of "asymptomatic cases" has always been a pet peave of mine. There is numerous amount of data on the gross inaccuracy of Covid testing. While that is a whole separate discussion, a symptomatic case to me is the only type of case that should be considered, but that's just me. What do I know?

IMO, Health and Governmental authorities/agencies inflated caseloads using this faulty technique to push a "pandemic" narrative. The most recently published study on the issue of "Lockdown Effectiveness", of which China must be aware, points out how ineffective they are.

50 symptomatic cases in a city of 26 million in my mind is not a reason to lockdown 26 million people for 2 months, which is why I suspect some motive involved here.

No... The Shanghai municipality would be responsible for this one...

And thankfully it's not spreading outside of Shanghai...

It's funny.. Originally, China didn't report the number of asymptomatic...Then they got called on it... So now they do.... And are still getting called on it...

They won't abandon the zero tolerance policy until after the fall election...

“The patients who died had an average age of 88, the Shanghai government said. All had underlying health conditions, and none had been vaccinated.”

Why is this being ignored…….old folks and those who are weakened by other health problems are the ones in danger! How many healthy people, especially the very young, have suffered and continue to suffer? Xi is aware of this problem but he doesn’t seem to be that concerned……nothing seems to have changed in his approach to this very serious problem.

SHANGHAI, April 23 (Reuters) - China's major financial hub of Shanghai reported more new COVID-19 related deaths on April 22, as residents vented their anger over a harsh lockdown and strict censorship online.

Shanghai's full-city lockdown began at the start of April, though many people have been confined to their homes for much longer, and the stress began to tell on the residents.

The city, battling China's biggest coronavirus outbreak so far, reported 12 new COVID-19 deaths on Friday, up from 11 a day before.

The patients who died had an average age of 88, the Shanghai government said. All had underlying health conditions, and none had been vaccinated.

On social media, netizens battled against censors overnight to share a six-minute video entitled "The Voice of April", a montage of voices recorded over the course of the Shanghai outbreak.

Panning across Shanghai's silent skyscrapers, the video consists of residents complaining about the lack of food and medicine, as well as the heavy-handed tactics of city authorities.

All direct references to the film were removed from the Weibo microblogging service by Saturday morning, though some comments criticising the censorship survived.

"I can only say that if you don't even want to listen to just a small amount of real voices, then it is really hopeless," said one.

Many were reminded of the anger that erupted on social media two years ago following the death from COVID-19 of Li Wenliang, a doctor reprimanded by police for sharing "false" information about a new SARS-like infectious disease in Wuhan in late 2019.

"Dr. Li, after two years nothing has changed," said another Weibo user. "We still can't open our mouths, still can't speak."

Despite the anger and frustrations among residents in Shanghai's sealed off residential compounds, local officials maintain there will be no relaxation until new cases outside of quarantine areas have all been cleared.

"The more critical the period becomes, the more we need to grit our teeth and focus our strength," Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng was quoted as saying on Shanghai's official government WeChat channel late on Friday.

The number of cases outside quarantine areas stood at 218 on Friday, down from 250 the previous day.

There were 20,634 new local asymptomatic infections in the city, rebounding from 15,698 on Thursday. Total new symptomatic cases reached 2,736, up from 1,931 on April 21, official data showed.

"One strategy that needs immediate implementation is to increase rates of the booster vaccination dose to the elderly and other vulnerable groups and to see if mRNA vaccines can be used," said Jaya Dantas, a public health expert at the Curtin School of Population Health in Australia, who is monitoring the Shanghai outbreak.

China has yet to introduce its own mRNA vaccines, and has chosen not to import those developed overseas.

In a study published by China's Disease Prevention and Control Center on Friday, medical experts in the northeastern city of Jilin, the location of another recent outbreak, said China's vaccines have been effective so far, though new emerging COVID-19 variants remained unpredictable.

They said "the data is strong enough to indicate the public significance of the strategy of full and booster vaccination, particularly for the elder population."

Liang Wannian, head of a COVID-19 expert advisory body with the National Health Commission, told state television late on Friday that China's current "dynamic" zero-COVID policies had given the country "time to prepare", allowing it to strengthen vaccination levels.

Tang Jiafu, a city official, acknowledged on Saturday that the disruptions were putting Shanghai's environmental health under pressure, with less than half of its sanitation workers currently active, affecting garbage collection rates.

Even after shutting down for more than 30 days, some compounds are still reporting new cases, casting doubt on the efficacy of China's approach.

"This is a significant amount of time and does have mental health impacts: people are exhausted and frustrated," said Dantas.

Perhaps you aren’t getting the reports the rest of the world gets! It’s now becoming a problem in Beijing.

Isn’t it strange that the longer this lockdown goes on, the more people are dying of this virus??? It seems to me that perhaps people are dying because of this lockdown and is being blamed on the virus! China is well known for manipulating any type of information in order to paint a different picture for their own people and the rest of the world. There are 25 million people in Shanghai, 87 have died, the average age is 81years old! All this just doesn’t add up!

Shanghai reported 39 Covid deaths Sunday, its highest daily toll despite weeks of lockdowns, while China's capital Beijing warned of a "grim" situation with rising infections.

The world's second-largest economy has been struggling to stamp out its worst outbreak in two years with a playbook of harsh lockdowns and mass testing as it sticks to a strict zero-Covid policy, taking a heavy toll on businesses and public morale.

The cosmopolitan business hub of Shanghai has been almost entirely locked down since the start of the month, snarling supply chains, with many residents confined to their homes for even longer as it became the epicentre of the outbreak.

China's biggest city only announced its first fatalities from the outbreak on April 18, despite reporting thousands of cases each day in recent weeks.

It reported 39 more deaths on Sunday, National Health Commission data showed, bringing its total toll to 87, while the country logged nearly 22,000 new local virus cases.

Shanghai's previous highest daily toll since lockdown was 12, reported a day earlier.

The city of 25 million has struggled to provide fresh food to those confined at home, while patients have reported trouble accessing regular medical care as thousands of health staff were deployed for Covid testing and treatment.

Health officials have warned of the particular risks of Covid to the country's older and largely unvaccinated population, saying the average age among fatalities in Shanghai's outbreak was 81.

Five of those who died had been vaccinated, though authorities have said the deaths involved people who had severe underlying diseases and who were in critical condition.

Doubts have been raised over the efficacy of China's homegrown vaccines, and Beijing has not imported any foreign-made jabs.

Censors have battled to scrub an online backlash against the prolonged lockdown in Shanghai, including the rapid censorship of a viral video by residents outlining their daily challenges to eat and access essential services.

On Saturday evening, a residential building fire sparked fear and criticism on social media, given that many exits in compounds have generally been sealed as part of Covid controls.

Meanwhile 22 more infections were reported in Beijing, after warnings from an official on Saturday that the city must take urgent action.

Health official Pang Xinghuo said preliminary observations suggested Covid had been "spreading invisibly" within the capital for a week now, affecting "schools, tour groups and many families".

"The risk of continued and hidden transmission is high, and the situation is grim," Tian Wei of Beijing's Municipal Party Committee told a press briefing.

"The whole city of Beijing must act immediately."

Targeted lockdowns have already been imposed on some communities where Covid cases have been found, while some fitness studios in the capital said they were suspending classes indefinitely.

Beijing has also imposed tight controls on entry to the city, with travellers required to have a negative Covid test from within 48 hours.

People who have travelled to cities or counties where just a single Covid case has been reported in the past two weeks are barred entry.

Not just Beijing..Several other international hubs...

It's not spreading out from Shanghai the way it did from Hong Kong... I should have been more clear...

There were 20,634 new local asymptomatic infections in the city, rebounding from 15,698 on Thursday. Total new symptomatic cases reached 2,736, up from 1,931 on April 21, official data showed.
