Hitler was obsessed with race long before becoming Chancellor of Germany. His speeches and writings spread his belief that the world was engaged in an endless racial struggle. White Nordic people topped the racial hierarchy; Slavs, Blacks, and Arabs were lower, and Jews, who were believed to be an existential threat to the “Aryan Master race,” were at the very bottom.

When the Nazis came to power, these beliefs became government ideology and were spread publicly in posters, radio, movies, classrooms and newspapers. They also served as a basis for a campaign to reorder German society, first through the exclusion of Jews from public life, then the murder of disabled Germans as well as Slavs and, ultimately, the effort to exterminate European Jewry.

“Alien,” “Parasite,” “Degenerate” In order to make Jewish persecution publicly palatable, Nazi propagandists attempted to dehumanize Jews by branding them as a biological threat to Germany. Government-sponsored racist propaganda was widely distributed denouncing Jews as “alien,” and “parasitic,” and responsible for Germany’s cultural, political, and economic “degeneration.”

These words had an enormous effect, creating an environment in which persecution and violence were acceptable. Students burned books by Jewish authors on pyres and purged works of art and music by Jews and others considered “un-German.” Much worse, Jews became less human in German eyes, and less worthy of society’s protection.

“Jewish Communists” was another term used by Nazi fascists as they sought to destroy the legitimacy of Germany's Jewish citizens, and turn them into contemptible "enemies of the state" in the eyes of their countrymen.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Nazis were, in part, defined by their opposition to communism as they treated them as competitors in their own struggle to control the mind of the public. After the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, Germany seemed vulnerable to the spread of communism, particularly after a communist uprising in Berlin. The Weimar democratic government was unstable, and its economy was in shambles.

In their struggle against socialists and communists, the fascists and other right-wing groups exploited the fact that some prominent communists were Jewish as they harnessed and emphasized anti-semitism for their cause. Longstanding false links between Jews and Communism were advertised to underscore reoccurring anti-semitic conspiracy theories about Jewish global domination.

Obsessive anti-Jewish hatred, and the demonization of Israel, a.k.a., rabid anti-Semitism is something against which all people with an intact conscience need to firmly stand, whether here on OPP, or anywhere else in the world.

I applaud kemmer for opposing such insidious behavior, rather than ignoring it... and for saying so openly without resorting to the use of cult-like buzzwords: "change agents" - "deceivers" - "ZOG" as anti-Semites themselves do.

ZOG is a white supremacist acronym for "Zionist Occupied Government," which reflects the common white supremacist belief that the U.S. government is controlled by Jews... words that are intended to create suspicion, if not downright hatred, and always with the intent to divide. This has resulted in white supremacist slogans such as "Smash ZOG," "Kill ZOG, or "Death to ZOG."

It isn't kemmer who is spreading the disinformation by which Jews have been presented throughout history as the scourge of humanity, which is commonly expressed in terms of threats to religion, science, power, dominant ethnic groups, nation-states, and currently, as threats to "human rights and racial justice."

With the advent of social media, these ancient, 'viral' conspiracy themes are able to spread on the internet more quickly, and with less effort, than at any previous point in history.

Studies on anti-Semitism show how the hatred is largely expressed by using code words rather than explicitly mentioning the Jewish people: Rather than writing about the Jews as a whole, online anti-Semites target well known individuals like George Soros or the Rothschild family; place three parentheses around names of people who are Jewish or, ostensibly, controlled by "devious Jews;" or apply age-old Jewish smears such as the matzah blood libel to the entire State of Israel.

Anti-Semitic tropes have become a common animating feature among online, prejudiced, hatred filled extremist activists who tend to peak during tense moments, as at present in the United States - created by wars and rumors of war.

I am amazed that any American can actually support the illegal and criminal Russian invasion of a peaceful and independent country, with no provocative move on the part of Ukraine. This invasion is the worst threat to our international system, since WWII. I don't know why you think that the majority of Slavs support this genocidal war. Certainly the Ukrainians, Poles, Romanians, Hungarians, and all other peoples in Eastern Europe condemn Russia.
I am also amazed at the incredible courage and determination of the Ukrainian people to fight against the Russian army. I don't believe I have seen such bravery since the original Arab- Israeli war, on the part of Israel.
I think we should not only allow on Ukraine to join NATO, we should insist on it. They have proven that they need it and certainly would be an important addition to block Russian expansion into Europe!
