FYI: In early 1940, president Roosevelt and Winston Churchill were engaged in voluminous correspondence on all sorts of matters regarding war against Hitler. FDR maintained the facade of not wanting to send "our American boys" to fight, but he fully realized America would eventually be engaged and he kept that close to the vest as his administration began preparations, not only to help England but to get our military ready. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 41 sealed the deal. Four days after that attack, Hitler declared war on the United States.

When that happened, the United States was faced with the nearly overwhelming challenge of a two front war. FDR understood that Hitler at the time was the greatest threat and so he told his Pacific commanders to hold the line while America geared up to fight Nazi Germany. Fortunately, FDR put America's most aggressive Navy and Army commanders in charge of fighting the Japanese and they wasted no time. During May and June of 1942, in the Battles of the Coral Sea and Midway, US Naval forces turned the tide against Japan.

Operation Overlord was another matter altogether.
