This meme below goes around and around on my Facebook feed posted by my conservative friends. Each time I try to explain to them that the House doesn't try the president but instead acts the same as a grand jury would in our own criminal system. Impeachment is similar to an indictment in criminal law, and thus it is essentially the statement of charges against the official nothing more. The trial is supposed to take place in the Senate but Moscow Mitch seems determined from keeping that from happening.

So do you get it? The house did not try the president because if they did there would be no reason for a trial by the Senate would there...

LOL!!!

That meme is a perfect description of some of the "arguments" I've actually seen right here on OPP over the past few weeks.

To be fair though... I'm betting the only reason why liberals seem to have a better handle on how the process works is because learning about the process actually helps the anti-Trump narrative. Conversely, the pro-Trump narrative depends on a misunderstanding of the process.

I watched some of the trial yesterday and couldn't believe I was watching grown adults putting on a show of really bad rhetorical tricks in front of a Senate that can't possibly be fooled by any of it. The only possible way that "strategy" can work is if the entire purpose is to feed right-wing media with BS charges against Democrats with which to saturate the conservative base that Republican senators have to answer to. I'm sure a complete misunderstanding of the impeachment process helps with that.

Dershowitz----part of the Epstein gang. Remember that...

His name is in the book, too. Along with Weinstein, Clinton, Trump, Maxwell, Acosta, and several others. Wouldn't surprise me if several members of both parties are also tied to this corruption.

I don't know much about Dershowitz's history but how about the fact that he stood in front of Congress and said that Trump's quid-pro-quo is a standard practice in foreign policy? LOL

Aside from virtually admitting that there WAS a quid-pro-quo (Trump's defense can't seem to make up their minds on that one) He is now left with this absurd need to justify it and so this is what he came up with. Sometimes, even an expert can say really stupid things that ANYONE can see through, especially when politics in involved.

Yes, it's standard practice to stipulate terms on our foreign aid, but these terms are always clearly and publicly defined AND agreed upon IN writing BEFORE the aid is approved, not covertly hinted at in coy conversations. And the formal stipulations of foreign aid always involve long-term policies and conditions that benefit the relationship between nations not personal favors.

Dershowitz was obviously trying to blur that line. I'm sure it didn't work on ANYONE in the chamber but I'm sure that's not the point either. I'm sure the point is to convince the lesser educated public into supporting the president.

Yup... the Republican strategy is to rely on that willful ignorance that Trump himself depends on to generate pressure on Republican lawmakers.

So, not like this...
(Dershowitz) ---/argument/--- (senators)
...because senators know better.

More like this...
(Dershowitz) ---/argument/--- (Fox News) ---/amplify/ --- (deplorables) --- /votes/--- (senators)
...because leveraging the ignorance and pride among the people has always been an effective path to power for those who don't deserve it.

The Senate is the place where the actual trial takes place. Senators are called jurors in this setting. During a trial, documents are presented, witnesses are called, both sides are allowed to ask questions in real time in front of the jury. Except when our corrupt president is involved. In this case, the President's "Fixers" are sent out to clean up the shitshow he caused by bribing a foreign leader for personal gain and obstructing the congress from doing their job. Because it is hard for them to wage a defense on the actual facts before them, they resort to legal blather about the impeachment process and try to make a case that Obama is the person to blame for this mess.

Alan Dershowitz has made a career on defending guilty scumbags, such as O.J. Simpson and Jeffrey Epstein. If the high profile case is juicy enough and the fee big enough, he will flip flop with the best lawyers in town.
In the Epstein case, lawyer Dershowitz was accused of having sex with Epstein's recruits. Maybe he sees the same opportunity in defending Trump.

"To have a quid you must have quo." Is that unreasonable? If not, name them. It is completely unreasonable, however, if one is a progressive and have only the destruction of the President in their limited hate filled sight. Name the actual crimes that were charged against the President. You can't. At the worst it is merely your thought crimes against Trump's thought crime. Finally, if you could find no merit in the legal defences points made by the Trump team yesterday you might be a typical propagandize non-thinking, blind, dumb and ignorant progressive whose eyes are crosed, whose mother never dressed him right and Jesus don't love you either. Other than those little things you're probably a nice guy. 🤗

Consider their audience... Both sides of the Senate can see right through their BS, but that isn't who they're appealing to. They are trying to convince the barely-literate constituencies in Republican districts so as to apply pressure to the respective senators to stay loyal to their fuhrer or lose their offices. "Head on a pike" as that White House aide said.
